Quick Odds and Ends for Tuesday
By: Martha | January 23rd, 2007
•Javier Zanetti, Inter captain and example to all who share his ancient age, is in such great form that he is being considered for a recall into the Argentine national team (he has 102 caps but hasn’t played since late 2005). In other words, Zanetti rules.
•After his meltdown against Livorno, Francesco Totti will be suspended just a single Serie A match and will be available when Roma host visit Inter on Super Bowl Sunday. Sorry, mixing my footballs there — when they host Inter in two weeks.
•According to “transfer market consultant” (Which means, what, exactly? A man who guesses like the rest of do but gets paid for it?) Ernesto Bronzetti, there is a 60% chance Ronaldo will move to Milan before the January transfer window closes. The clubs are still battling over the issue of a transfer fee — Real reportedly want about €10 million, while Milan are refusing to pay anything at all — but if Mr. Bronzetti thinks it’s going to happen, who are we to argue?
•And the latest massive English star to have his name bandied about in the Italian press is Frank Lampard. Yes, Juve are involved. Do you even have to ask?

Martha, you know I am new to this sport but clearly chose the best league to follow (far more drama than even most NBA rosters have to offer). But why would any club shell out that kind of dough for a guy who can’t get off the bench at his current team? Last I’d read Ronaldo was washed-up and looking like Homer playing pick up hoops on the Simpsons.

Inter will be hosting Roma, not the other way around. The game with Roma at the Olimpico was already played earlier this season.

Muddia, may I? I have been forced to follow Real Madrid this season because Canna is there, so I’ve gotten caught up in this Ronaldo mess.
Ronaldo has been on the bench because he was/is injured and because he’s a troublemaker and Real’s manager, Capello, has no tolerance for players who question him (see: Antonio Cassano). He is overweight, but at the beginning of the season demonstrated the ability to lose weight if motivated. Also, Ronaldo still generates a great deal of revenue for Real, regardless of his form, which has to be attractive to Milan. Milan need some depth at striker and although they won’t get Ronaldo for free as they want, they will get a cut rate for a revenue generating player who can still score goals if in the mood.

In addition to what Louise said, I feel like Milan have a major weakness for big-name players, particularly when their fans are antsy and want goals. While it might work — and I hope it does — I can’t stop thinking about Rivaldo, and what a disaster that signing was for Milan ….
