Ranieri Wastes No Time in Offending the Masses
By: Martha | February 13th, 2007
On the job at Parma for less than 24 hours, Claudio Ranieri has already been forced to issue his first apology. Didn’t I tell you he was great?
In his efforts to get the entire city fired up about saving the club from relegation, Ranieri — sounding strangely similar to George Bush — stood on something tall (I hope, anyway), and yelled “I will take no prisoners, leave nobody injured, you’re either with me or you die!” Needless to say, coming less than two weeks after the death of a cop at the hands of psychotic “fans,” Ranieri’s choice of words didn’t go over very well and he quickly clarified, claiming metaphor rather than actual violence. (Do you see now why I love him? He’s bonkers, but in a really good way.)
In addition to threatening bloodshed, Ranieri inspired his troops by assuring them he will be thinking “only about Parma 24 hours a day,” and speaking hopefully of his plans to “give them the confidence and desire to fight for one another,” rather than “give up at the first sign of difficulty,” which has apparently been their problem until now. Well. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to go out and kick some ass — think somebody’s glad to be back in a job in which he can speak to the press in his mother tongue?

Woah! Sit down, Claudio. Take a break, breathe. It’s kind of hot in here, is it? I’m glad to see he is so excited but that was a little too much. Well, it’s not that uncommon to use metaphors of war but in the eye of recent events it was more than stupid.
