Roberto Mancini’s Suffering From Amnesia

By: chris | March 13th, 2008

bobconfused.jpgThe drama that is Internazionale FC at the moment is a little difficult to comprehend, what with new revelations coming out hourly, and people not believing things in both directions (and the sensationalist media outlets of the world not helping matters: Mourinho Still Wants Inter!!! With Drogba!! And Lampard!! And His Dog!!). What we know is this: Mancio resigned, then Moratti didn’t want him to go, so Mancio is back and will be Inter’s tactical genius for the next umpteen years. Everybody good?

Alright, well here’s the confusing part. Mancio said this at the press conference where he resigned effective circa never:

“I think that these will be my last two and a half months on the Inter bench. After four years and even if I have another four years left on my contract, I will leave Inter. I have already told the players.”

Mancini was asked if the Champions League elimination to Liverpool had played a part in this incredible decision.

“No, tonight’s defeat has nothing to do with it.”

And then today there was this:

It wasn’t premeditated at all. The defeat was a hard one to take and there was such bitterness at the wasted chances and that it wasn’t played as 11 against 11.

“Their goal came from our possession and we made too many errors, but the pressure of the situation and our need to turn things around came into it.

“In the cold light of day I spoke to the President and I think I just needed to feel trusted.”

So it had nothing to do with the loss….but it wasn’t premeditated. Was the rift with Figo enough for him to decide to hang them up? Did Jesus appear to him after the game and tell him he should quit? I’m thoroughly confused, as I’m sure is every Inter fan who was having illusions of Mourinho (or Lippi, or Rafa) while the club had a lame duck coach.

So which is it, Mancini? Do you not know? Did you forget? Or was this really a ruse and you never had any intention of resigning, just wanted to take the pressure off of your players……

(Neh, that’d be too smart for him.)

Would it be too much to label what Mancini did Tuesday as a… “Cassanata”? If you remove the hysterical feet stomping/shirt throwing/hair pulling, it awfully comes close, doesn’t it? Including the ‘public apology’ the day after…

In fact in its own perverse way, the fake apparent calmness he exhibited in that press room is Mancio’s own version of a Cassano impression. Scary when you think about it…

I think it went like this: Mancini and his charges have stuffed up another CL campaign, the bloke is feeling miserable, decides to quit on the spot. Coaches are trained to be disingenuous at press conferences, so when asked if the loss had anything to do with it, he replies that it didn’t and that he had planned to leave at the end of the season long ago. Next, Moratti calms him down in the week with kind words to the effect that you’re not as a bad a coach as you think, effectively changing his mind for him so at the next interview he naturally completely forgets what he had said in that emotional state of mind on that CL Tuesday night.
