Roma Take Super Cup, Commence Haunting Inter

By: Martha | August 19th, 2007

Squee!Roma lifted the first real trophy of the season today, beating Inter (again) 1-0 on a late Daniele De Rossi penalty. (Inter fans knew all was lost when Francesco Totti, despite drawing the — soft — penalty, realized it might be best if he let someone else take it. Damn him for that self-awareness.)

The scoreline makes the game sound more cagey than it was — Roma dominated stretches of the match, and despite neither keeper being forced into many saves, both teams wasted two fantastic chances each, and the final score really should have been higher. Ludovic Giuly managing to shoot high twice from ludicriously close-range, while for Inter David Suazo (who was a constant threat) blew a free header and Luis Figo took a loose touch at the wrong time after having been set free by a sick Zlatan Ibrahimovic move.

Additionally, there were exciting things like Christian Panucci maybe jamming his elbow into Nicolas Burdisso’s poor, tender nose, a move which resulted in a bit of argy-bargy and Dejan Stankovic picking up a card for rage (which, sadly, didn’t make him play any better). Oh, and Simone Perrotta was sent off before even entering the pitch — maybe the players aren’t quite there, but referee Roberto Rosetti is in mid-season form.

(Six more days til kick-off.)

That was for you, Chris. Just for you.

I’m not just saying it shouldn’t have been called, just it could easily have been let go. It’s the sort of call that Totti counts on getting and, 9 times of out 10, he gets it.

I daresay that if it had been Ibra that had drawn it, you’d have been much more sure of its non-softness.

First of all, that last sentence doesn’t even make sense. Either that or I’m having a stupid day.

Second, drawing fouls is an art. Ask Paul Pierce.

Third, if Marco Cassetti had stuck his leg out about 12 seconds after Ibra had put the ball past him in the box, I’d call a spade a spade and say it was a penalty.

Fourth, did you just decide before the season began to say “Fuck it, I’m not hiding my Inter bias anymore”?

Happy to finally catch a game live Martha? ;)

By the way, have to agree with Chris there, that was a P.K. As the RAI commentator said, Burdisso was naive into letting his left leg drag on Totti’s dribble. Totti went down like a bag of potatoes anyways, but I don’t think there were any doubts on the call. And over the course of the match (especially the 2nd half), Roma deserved their win.

The funny part of the night though was Perrotta’s red card before he even entered the field! Apparently (quoting from the RAI commentators) he said to the linesman “Così ci fate perdere la partita” (You’re making us lose the game this way) after a suspected handball in Inter’s box (leading to Figo’s one-on-one chance). If that is true, seems a bit severe to me… but maybe he said one word too many. :P

I agree 100% 89% that Roma deserved to win. (Jeez, Chris, I said they dominated stretches. What do you want from me, worship?)

And I never said drawing fouls wasn’t an art, Totti is fantastic at it. Marco’s “bag of potatoes” thing is probably what bothered me. That and the lying on the ground in agony afterwards.

(That last sentence made tons of sense, Chris, if you brought your pronoun translating tool. Otherwise, I can see how it might be a bit impenetrable.)

I’m not even a Roma fan and I have to say that was 100% a penalty. Burdisso, who isn’t the most graceful of defenders, made a clumsy challenge and the look on his face after showed everyone that even he knew it was a penalty. He didn’t even protest the decision.

i hope you post about it tomorrow, but palermo won against real zaragozza, 4-2, with a goal from miccoli and a hat trick from amauri. that’s right.

and for real? a brace for olivieria. you know, the one that was at milan last year doing nothing. funny how things change.

I was disappointed With Inter. The Midfield did not look good at all today, they were too spread out and slow. They weren’t moving to the ball and the passing was terrible. Stanks had an awful game, maybe the worst I have ever seen him play and Viera had no business being out there today. It got a little better when Figo and Cambiasso came on. They didn’t match up well with the formation Roma used today. Roma had a lot of players and speed up the middle and dominated it. They dominated the whole Midfield. What was with everyone falling? The defense played well, especially Chivu and Materazzi. Burdisso, on the other hand, was not as good as the other three today. The strikers wasted possessions too, giving up the ball way too easily and making poor decisions with passing. They had some good attempts but not enough. Roma looked to be in far better physical shape than Inter did. Roma did play well.

A poor performance by Inter. This is not the worst game to lose since it was really a glorified exhibition match that gets you a trophy for winning it. Still would have been nice to win. BTW, Rosetti called a terrible game and my comments have nothing to with the peanlty call. He just called a bad game in general, both ways.

Next week we get down to business and Inter better smarten up becasue Udinese held them both matches last season and are no push overs. They must win. Hopefully today was a wake up call. Less than a week… can’t wait.

Inter played in the previous two of these (?) and I barely remember what happened. Just sayin.

I thought the penalty was weak as well, but still the correct call under the current rules. And I hope Burdisso remains just a squad player.

Paolo, I was so consumed by how bad Stankovic (who is second in my affection only to Figo) was playing that I lost track of how useless the rest of the midfielders were, but you’re right — there were long periods were the Inter midfield wasn’t even a factor in the game. And I was wondering about the falling thing too, it kept happening at the one end — small, pre-season oil slick, maybe?

I couldn’t figure it out Martha. I did read that he had a fever or something, but still no excuse.

RT, this was Inter’s 3rd straight appearance in the Supercoppa. How could you forget what happened last year?? haha, Inter down 3-0 at half time and won 4-3 after extra time. Figo’s free kick was the winner in extra time. But I see the point you are trying to make. The game itself really does not mean much.

Barca, if you are going to insult Inter fans at least spell the word that you used to insult us correctly. What does this game have to do with anything? Woo Hoo, Roma won Supercoppa… Inter won it the 2 previous years. Doesn’t mean much. You want to see hell? Watch what Inter puts the teams in Serie A through this season. The story is starting… but for you it will be a sad ending.
