Roma Thrashed!, Or: That’s What You Get For Playing a Real Team
By: Martha | July 23rd, 2007
While one has to admire Roma for scheduling a team from one of the top four leagues as its opposition in friendly match number one, getting thrashed 4-0 by Borussia Dortmund probably wasn’t the result they had in mind. And losing like that before 40,000 hostile fans must have made it smart even more. According to those who watched the game, Roma looked awful, despite fielding a mostly first-string lineup. Of course, they’ve been in training for just a few days and lack fitness, above all else; trying to play a strong team under those conditions is asking alot. (I don’t know how long Dortmund have been training, but would be willing to bet it’s longer than Roma.)
In other friendlies over the weekend, Palermo and Atalanta both won by double digits (let that be a lesson to you, Roma — next year schedule Nockberge and Unione Comuni della Presolana if you want good results). Of Palermo’s goals 15 goals, three were scored by new arrival Fabrizio Miccoli (Please just don’t talk about his eyebrow, ok?), who was only on the pitch for 45 minutes. For Atalanta, meanwhile, the big scorer was the magnificent Riccardo Zampagna, who scored five of his team’s 16 tallies. Oh, and Juve beat the Chinese Olympic team 4-0 which, according to club lapdog Tuttosport, makes them “Already better than Inter,” since the Nerazzurri only put three past them. Whatever, Tuttosport.

Do they really have S.P.Q.R. stamped on the front of their jerseys? That is so supremely cooler than anything Man United has ever put on the front of their jersey or for that matter any other club (although I always thought it kinda fitting that Cantona wore a jersey with “SHARP” emblazoned on the front). Big ups to Roma.

Unfortunately, V, my understanding is that those are temporary kits. The real ones will have the sponsor’s name in place of SPQR. Assuming, that is, that they can find a sponsor.

That was Dortmund’s fifth friendly game.

Thanks, Steven — I should have checked with you in the first place.

yep that’s just a temporary shirt til we have a new sponsor. We went all season without one last year, and I rather liked having the plain shirts, but I think they are in negotiations with two major firms at the moment for next season. Of course SPQR is still the motto of the City Council, and features on everything from lamp-posts and man-hole covers to tax bills and bus timetables.

I think they should just put the bust of Gaius Julius Caesar on the shirt.

really liked roma’s kits last year without the sponsor. the ones they wore late in the year with the four pepsi cans was absolutely god-freaking awful.
