Roma v Inter: Holy Crap

By: Martha | September 29th, 2007

Whoa. It’s amazing what playing against 10 men for over an hour will do for a team’s confidence, huh? Inter were on the stroll for most of the second half, locking the game down with three quick goals after Simone Perotta drew Roma level (off a lovely assist from the ever-generous Maxwell), and stroking the ball around like they know how to play, or something.

It didn’t start out that way, though. Inter opened with only one striker and tried valiantly to clog up the midfield, but the first few minutes were all Roma, and they had two real chances when Julio Cesar got down well to save both a Totti free kick and then Mancini’s quick shot off the rebound. Eventually, Inter settled down and had some possession, but Juan and Mexes were making life hell for The Great Zlatan, who could get no service, and was equally ineffective when he dropped deep to get touches (and then gave the ball away over and over again).

The game broke open in the 29th minute, when Totti played a lazy pass on a short corner: Maxwell picked it off and tore up field, putting Cesar in alone on Doni who made a great save. Sadly for Roma, though, the rebound went right to Zlatan whose header was kept from the back of the next by the hand of little Guily. Oops. He was sent off, Zlatan put the penalty away (barely), and the rout was on.

To be fair, despite the blowout scoreline (Inter’s second-half goals were from Crepo (Oh my GOD what a finish), Cruz and Cordoba), Roma weren’t really dominated in possession until the last half hour or so. They put Inter under periodic pressure but never tested Julio Cesar after Perotta’s goal, and apart from Maxwell’s giveaway in the box that created that goal, Inter defense rarely put a step wrong. Javier Zanetti, in particular, was virtually flawless — he’s been playing like he was 25 since Maicon got suspended and allowed him to move back to his original left right back spot; it’s almost too bad for Inter that Maicon only has one more game left to sit out.

Bad news for both teams on the injury front, though: Zlatan picked up a foot injury at the start of the second half and Olivier Dacourt, who was playing great for Inter, pulled up with what looked like a pretty serious groin strain. On the other side of the ball, Roma were forced to finish the match with only nine players when Perrotta went off with a muscle problem; no word yet on how bad his injury is.

if Giuly hadn’t been sent off the game would’ve been completely different. Roma were never going to beat Inter with 10 men.

This was a fantastic match. Inter were great in every area but Roma was also good before the sending off.

Steph: I do not think Jose will join any team until the summer so a lot of things could change by then. I still think Internazionale are the team he will manage. Maybe even Milan.

This match serves to prove two points:
    1) Giuly could have made one hell of a volleyball player.
    2) Conceding a penalty and getting sent off so early into the match is never a good idea. Even if Doni had save Zlatan’s PK, it would have been an uphill battle for Roma.

Albo, I don’t think Roberto Mancini had much of a choice regarding his substitutions. If you look at his bench before the match, here it is: Toldo, Crespo, Cruz, Pelè, Solari, Adriano, Suazo. With the exception of the keeper, those are 6 offensive players!

Giuly should’ve just allowed it to go in. Sure Inter would’ve been 1-0 up but at least Roma would have 11 players to turn the game around, and considering the way Roma was playing I think it could’ve happened.

    Amamzing result!!!!!!

Any footballer should know, or have enough sense, in that situaltion to give up the goal instead of taking the red card. Well, apparently no one told Giuly. Can’t blame anyone for that but him.

Inter was class tonight and were at the Olimpico to win. Yeah, yeah Roma played a lot of the match with 10 men, but they also had the ref who gave them way too much and didn’t call much against them before and after the sending off. Inter were there with a purpose and would have won anyway. 10, 11, 12 men The Nerazzuri were there to win. Aside from a defensive break down, Inter out classed them. They defense played well, so did the midfield and the 3 strikers each had a goal. BEAUTIFUL!! Its all coming together for the Nerazzurri now! AWESOME!!

Taib: Mourinho will get his filthy paws on Milan over my dead rossonera body, even if I have to go to the Milanello and commit seppuku in the manager’s office.

Inter. I say this through gritted teeth, but congratulations. For whatever reason, you were the better team out there. (Now please go back to forgetting how to play so I can mock you in peace.)

Angharad: We all know Ancelotti wants the Italy hotseat from Donandoni so he might leave after Donadoni gets sacked after Euro 2008 and then Mourinho will take over at Milan. It is just a hunch.
