Roma v Napoli: Madness at the Olympico

By: Martha | October 20th, 2007

Run, Forrest.Wow. How does it happen that Roma keep being involved in outrageously exciting games? I mean, 4-4?! Have mercy. I know their attack is potent and all, but should other teams really be having this much success against them?

I imagine there will be a lot of complaining in the press and elsewhere about Roma’s defending, since two of the goals came from poor clearances, but the fact that one was scored inside the first two minutes of each half suggests the problem is bigger than David Pizarro being unable to get the ball away. Of course, if they’re going to score four goals every game, I’m not sure it’s going to matter how many they give up.

I don’t know who that was dressed up like Napoli today, but it sure as hell wasn’t the same team who looked so useless against Inter for about an hour during Week 7. This team was oozing confidence and seemed not even to notice that they were playing in front of tens of thousands of hostile fans and not a single one of their own supporters. Even after Roma’s second goal, when Napoli looked to waver a bit, they pulled themselves together and kept their self-belief, tying the match right after the half and not falling apart when keeper Gennaro Iezzo made his second major error of the game and let a long-range effort from Daniele De Rossi slip under him for a 3-2 Roma lead. Instead, Walter Gargano tied it with a completely ridiculous effort from distance less than 15 minutes later and, well, you get the idea: Goals, goals and more goals.

Check in with Chris and Joe later for their very biased reports; me, I need a nap.

Wait - by nap did you mean watch Inter? Because that makes total sense.
