Bad Time To Be An Italian In Europe
By: chris | March 4th, 2008
Milan 0 - Arsenal 2: And there she goes. Milan’s title defense is over a whole 12 minutes after Carletto waxed prophetic about Milan’s “Champions League DNA“. Whoops. From what I hear no one is blaming him, but I am for two reasons:
1. Don’t tempt the footballing gods. Ever.
2. You ALWAYS rest Clarence before a big Champions League game in the event something tragic happens - as it did against Lazio. The guy’s veins are running true with the same metal they cast the Champions League trophy from. Anytime Clarence is in the lineup your chances of winning go up about 7,146% (roughly). Always rest him. Always.
Carletto aside (I don’t blame him, rarely do), the red & black story over the two legs has to be Andrea Pirlo, who has gone from being one of the highest praised players in calcio week in, week out to crapping the bed over two European legs. But he’s allowed these moments, after all of his contributions to the Rossoneri. (Oh, and Ricky, who didn’t score 10 goals.)
This marks yet another disappointing point in a disappointing final season for one Paolo Maldini. They were bounced from the Coppa by Catania - the first ever trip for the Sicilians to the semis - have lost in the first knockouts as defending CL champs, and now can maybe hope to make the competition next year, as they scrap for 4th. Of course, maybe this is a blessing in disguise. It seems high time to usher in a new era at AC Milan, one not populated by elderly Brazilians. Time for Papa Silvio to write some checks.
* - Also, a round of applause to Uncle Fester for being able to spew out that much bullshit and still keep a straight face.
So things get more difficult now, with Inter up shit creek against Liverpool and Roma traveling to the Bernabeu. Though I suppose it’s better than sending Chievo to the 3rd qualifying stage, right?
Inter (0) v Liverpool (2): The good news for Inter is Crystal Chivu might play. The bad news for Inter is Crystal Chivu might play. Their back line is looking quite porous these days, and will be without the Matrix once again, as he gets to sit in the stands and yell not nice things to Fernando Torres all game long. With Cordoba and Samuel already out, things are dicey in the back.
Of course, the back line will matter little if they can’t bag some goals. At least two, to be precise.
* - Game’s next Wednesday, just thought I’d get this out of the way.
Real Madrid (1) v Roma (2): The Giallorossi are Italy’s best remaining hope to pass on through to the second knockout round after taking a victory back at the Olimpico in February. They’re riding a relatively hot streak, they’ve got health on their side and Real doesn’t…but it’s still Real Madrid. Thinks could look much better for calcio in Europe than they do right now.

Bullshit is right. Chose to focus on the Club World Cup my ass. As soon as I read that after the match, I wanted to punch him in the face.
I’m just so exhausted, as every Milan fan is. If the Milan head honchos don’t realize that change is needed after this, nothing will get to them.
Good luck to Roma tomorrow.

and of course, this little gem: “We have reached the Champions League Final in odd years – 2003, 2005 and 2007 – so we book our ticket for 2009.” Thanks buddy. Excellent strategy you have going there.

And also (last comment, I promise)…Did you have to post that picture? It really does hurt, even if it sums up this season.

Very well said Hana. We’re all sick of Galliani’s and Silvio’s bullshit. (And Ancelotti’s bullshit tactics for that matter.. plan B anyone?!!!!)

Wow, by the end of tomorrow Fiorentina could be the only Italian team left in a Europe competition. That’s depressing even for a Viola fan.
Though Spain isn’t having the greatest season in Europe either..come on Sevilla, you can do better than that! I’m afraid this is looking like a good year for England and their money.

come on moka carlo is one of the greatest coaches, and you cant put all the blame on him. pirlo was shit kaka was selfish. pato thought he was better than he actually was. plain and simple your team played like shit and outclassed by a stronger team. but i do think milan needs to get rid of their retirement home theme and bring in some more young talent, especially in the defence and they desperatly need a new goalie im thinking amelia.

Why Milan lost ? Tactical error (my opinon though). Milan should not play an EXTREMELY high tempo game against a team full with young bloods like Arsenal. Except Kaka and Pato, every other Milan players have been completely exhausted their stamina nearing the end of the 2nd half. A bit disappointed to see Pirlo, the rythm-maker, kept on feeding long balls and quick passes. Eventhough Kalac on his best would not allow Fabregas to score such a goal.

For a follower of Milan, this is really poor. Whilst I feel they were the best side in Europe in 2003-2004-2005, they’ve made the classic mistake of not investing in new players with some sort of longevity and are now paying the price. I think it will need a radical and very costly overhaul that needs to happen over the next couple of years to get Milan back on track - and I don’t mean the purchase of ageing Brazilian so-called “superstars” who are past their prime. Or the recall of an ageing, spent Ukranian. Sort it!!!

As with all defeats it is easy to have a knee-jerk reaction and say get rid of them all. However, Milan do need an update and that might start at the top with Ancelotti. Then a consistent young striker, playmaker to take pressure off Pirlo and replacement for Maldini need to top the shopping list.

I agree with what Adam said about Pirlo and Kaka but I also think there are other issues. I posted the following in the Milan thread but it is the same theme as here:
Gutted not only because of the loss but because it is now clear this team is not working. Chris made pertinent remarks regarding Seedorf’s absence and the form of Pirlo but I feel there is good reason beyond, something deep and structural, as to why Pirlo was found out.
Milan were relying and hoping for an individual piece of brilliance from Kaka or Pato, there was no flow, no confidence in possession.Kaka and Pirlo in the same team means no width in midfield. No width in midfield means tireless, skilled and fast backup players are needed to make the team work creatively. That’s where Milan suffered. Gattuso is starting to tire, Ambrosini is starting to tire and Seedorf is past his best. Kaladze is not fast enough anymore and Maldini as brilliant as he is does not have the legs to sustain a high level for 90 mins. For Milan to keep playing Pirlo and Kaka in the same team we need new young holding players in midfield, players such as Aquilani, new left back or at least a fully fit Janka, and a top class forward, in the Benzema, Amauri or even Vucinic mold. What u guys think? I don’t know.Posted from

Milan lost yesterday for one reason: the mid was shite. And the mid was shite for one reason: Ambrosini. He sucked 5 years ago, sucks now and will continue to suck in the future. He shouldn’t even be on the bench for a team like Milan.

I just wanted to drop by and say that Liverpool has a two-goal advantage in the series, not Inter…

Sorry Scott, I guess that’s by Nerazzurri heart shining through…
(And also sorry Hana, but I couldn’t not put the pic up - it describes everything.)

THE BLAME SHOULD GO TO THE SUPERSTARS OF MILAN FOR NOT STEPPING UP. JUST BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY CAN WIN IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN. LETS GO ROME.

as much as it pains me to say this, i hope inter overcomes the 2-nil deficit. i really dislike them, but i think my dislike for english teams is so much more. plus the longer they are in the CL the more tired they will be in the league, which is better for us roma fans.
but oddly enough, the only english team that i kind of like whatsoever is arsenal, i think it has to do with my cousin liking them. plus they play some rather nice football
