Champions League: Inter Win, Roma Suffer Tough Loss
By: Martha | October 2nd, 2007
Inter picked up their third comfortable win in a row today — thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s fourth brace of the young season — with a 2-0 home win over PSV. The bad news, however, is that they lost both Cristian Chivu (two fairly harsh yellows) and David Suazo (an elbow no cameraman seems to have caught as the final whistle blew) to red cards, and will be without both for the trip to Moscow at the end of the month. Great.
Despite playing with 10 men for nearly the final half-hour, Inter always looked to have the game in hand, and were in control even before Zlatan scored his first Champions League goal in almost two years in the 15th minute. The goal came from the penalty spot after he was dragged down by Jan Kromkamp, and he doubled Inter’s lead 15 minutes later with a looping header off a Figo cross. The “shot” came from near the endline and looked a whole lot more like a cross than what it turned into, but the goal counted and Inter were mostly content to sit back and absorb pressure from that point, particularly after in the second half.
David Suazo came on to help the Italian side counter and it sort of went well — he just simply dribbled past the PSV defense twice (yes, he was faster dribbling than all of their defenders were without the ball), leaving them for dead only to shoot horribly over and wide once and have his attempted well-saved another time. On the other end, PSV had a couple of alarmingly free headers but they blew both chances, and Julio Cesar was up to the task on the shots they put on net, getting down well on two occasion to make important saves. When the whistle blew, Inter and PSV found themselves joint second in Group G behind Fenerbahçe, who picked up a point earlier today and sit top with four points.
Over in Manchester, meanwhile, Roma — unexpectedly without keep Alexander Doni — suffered a tough 1-0 loss in a match that sounds laden with controversy: Both teams had goals ruled out for offside, Roma had a good penalty shout waved away, and Cristiano Ronaldo may or may not have thrown a nasty elbow. Simone Perrotta and Mauro Esposito both missed late chances after Man U were down to 10 men due to a Ronaldo injury, but in the end Wayne Rooney’s pretty 70th minute goal stood, and Roma were left second in the group, tied with Sporting — their next CL opponent — on three points, while Man U climbed clear of the pack with a perfect six points from two matches.
[Note: Since the Roma match was on live TV everywhere, I assume many of you saw it -- I only read about it, so please fill in the many gaps in my reports in the comments.]

Aquilani was substituted off injured I think. That is more bad news for Roma as Doni was injured as well.

I think Doni was ill, not hurt — that’s something, at least. I saw that Aquilani went off but didn’t realize he’s been injured again, that’s no good at all.

Martha: Yeah, Doni had a stomach bug. Aquilani had a thigh problem from early reports and had to come off. It has gone downhill pretty fast hill for Roma but putting this defeat in perspective, they have played their hardest match in qualifying and are still in a great position to qualify.

Aquilani was definitely in extreme pain.I was hurt just watching him leave. I love Aquilani. Roma lost a penalty which was very deserved towards them plus there goal was ruled offside and it was clearly not offside. C. Ronaldo did get elbowed but, it didn’t deserve a card. It looked very accidental if you ask me plus he was definitely asking for it after those comments in his book.

Biggest surprise of the day, an Italian stepped on the field for Inter!!! Youngster Bolzoni made an appearance.

I only saw the last 20 minutes, enough to witness Roma missing three crystal-clear chances.
Speaking as a Roma sympathizer and soccer critic, what the hell is wrong with Perrotta? I mean, for real. I’m starting to think he had some childhood trauma related to scoring, like he got tackled and kicked in the face repeatedly by the opposing team’s coach after he scored in a soccer game ate the age of seven… so now he’s afraid to put the ball in the net.
Inter sucks. If Ibra got a long-term injury, Inter would get kicked out during the group stage and would fail to qualify for next year’s CL.
Don’t worry, we won’t make their absence felt next year ;)

Gianni! Dude, let Inter rest on the comfort of a solid performance for a few hours, before ripping them, man! (And, yes, as an Inter fan, my greatest fear is Zlatan getting hurt. *knocking on wood as we speak* ) You gotta admit, though, they’re getting better. Right? Come on, admit it.

Oh, and I think you might be on to something about Perrotta — someone needs to dig into his past for photos of the tragic event, so we can pity him for the beating rather than for not being able to score.
And, Francesco, I think the reason I want Matrix back most is so Inter can always say that have an Italian on the pitch. (:

Roma have no one to blame for that loss but themselves. They had several wide open shots in the latter parts of the second half and just didn’t convert. Is it me, or has this downward trend in the last four games - excluding the first 2-2 tie — been marked by Totti’s lack of good touches in the box? He is setting up others quite well - ahem, Perotta!! - but not getting enough of his own cracks at goal. That has to change.

Ibra is just sick. Inter at least get some defender’s back for the next match and I am sure Ibra, Crespo & Cruz are more than capable to beat the CSKA Moscow. FORZA INTER!
I Agree with Whigsboy. It was Roma’s fault they lost. The missed quite a few chances which should have easily been finished, otherwise they played well and should have at the very least taken a point. Totti’s lack of touches in the box were becasue he was hardly ever in it. He is the World’s most leathal finisher and he needs to be the one cracking it in. Vucinic did elbow Ronaldo and cut him him open pretty good but it was completely accidental. As for the rest of the story about the no penalty call, the phantom tackles which produced yellows etc… It was Manchester United @ Home.
