Sampdoria Get Busy, Signing a Pair of (Former) Mortal Enemies
By: Martha | January 12th, 2007
Last time we mentioned Saadi Gadhafi (that’s a phrase you hear about once in a lifetime), he was training with Sampdoria, and planning to turn out for the team in a friendly. It was all very light and relaxed, as if the man had finally realized that a)he’s not very good at football, and b)with all those injuries and illnesses, God is trying to tell him to hang it up. Sadly, it seems that neither Saadi nor Samp got the message, and he’s signed a six-month contract with the club.
Based on his history in Italian football — always with clubs, oddly enough, that have some connection to Libya and/or oil — Gaddafi will appear in a single game for a few minutes, between injuries and general uselessness. One does have to respect him, though, for his willingness to continuously toil in the reserve sides of minor Serie A clubs — either he really, really loves his football, or he pretends awfully convincingly. Because playing for Udine’s reserves? That’s a really shitty publicity stunt.
In addition to Gadhafi, Samp also signed Gabriel Enzo Ferrari, an 18-year-old Italian-American striker who will join the club’s youth team. Ferrari — who, based on his MySpace page, weighs about 14 pounds — comes from the youth setup of the New York Red Bulls, an MLS side that actually has a pretty sophisticated academy program (for an American team, anyway). Thank goodness it’s no longer 1984, or the lad would be ordered by Ronald Reagan himself to challenge Gadhafi to a duel.
