Sampdoria v Palermo: Oops.

Well, there’s a little good news out of this one for Palermo fans, as well as a lot of bad.
The good is that, based on today’s battling performance and last week’s second half, I think it’s safe to say the fight is back in Palermo. Which is good, because it means they won’t just collapse entirely and drop out of the top four, something that was looking very likely for a while there. Plus, Edison Cavani scored again and, despite not having many touches, was impressive as hell when he got the ball. Based on his first two appearances, he looks like a fantastic replacement for Caracciolo: Twice the skill and none of the attitude.
The bad news, however, is that the Rosaneri absolutely gave away two points as a result of a complete clusterfuck in front of the goal. Everything seemed fine — Barzagli was sheparding the ball to back-up keeper Federico Agliardi when they both just stopped and stared at one another. While they picked their noses, Quagliarella (Best name in Serie A?) ran in, took the ball, and passed it into the empty goal. Doh!
Additionally, Palermo played from more than an hour with a man advantage, which you’d think would lead to comfortable control of the game. However, had you not seen the red card (given to Giulio Falcone for what was inches from being a horror, leg-breaking tackle on Fabio Simplicio) you never would have guessed the teams were not at full strength. Don’t get me wrong, Palermo fought hard and actually put together a couple of nice, October-esque attacking moves in the second half, but Sampdoria always came right back with threatening attacks of their own. (Sampdoria? Good. Might even force their way into a European spot, before it’s all said and done.)
Hey, at least Zamparini and Guidolin can’t blame this one on the officials, right? Hell, they not only ruled a Samp goal out for offside but also gave the Rosaneri 60+ minutes with a man advantage — what more could the Palermo brass ask?
