Saturday Newsie Bits: Hurrah for Frey!

By: Martha | May 26th, 2007

Wor Ibra•In what is clearly the most important story of the day, mercurial France manager Raymond Domenech has finally called Fiorentina’s genius keeper Sebastian Frey into the nation team for a competitive match. Huzzah! (And about freaking time.)

•In other news, David Beckham has revealed the Shocking! News that he could have joined Milan this winter but rejected the Champions of Europe for the intense competition of MLS. Is it wrong to be wildly thankful he’s not in Serie A?

•Say it ain’t so: 31-year-old Alessandro Nesta is hinting at quitting the Azzurri. No Nesta or Maldini? Why, the team will be practically unrecognizable!

•The final of the Vatican’s Clericus Cup takes place today. Those of you who have been closely following the event will recall that finalists Redemptoris Mater and the Pontifical Lateran University faced off in an earlier round, with the former squeaking out a 1-0 victory. This may be a surprise only to me, but it turns out there are some actual footballers in the sides — Redemptoris even features a fellow by the name of Davide Tisato who was once part of Chievo’s youth setup. (In case you were wondering, “Vatican soccer watchers expect an attractive attacking game” — tune in to SportsCenter tonight for all the highlights.)

•Whiny, want-away David Di Michele is now telling the press if it was up to him, he’d totally stay in Palermo. Whatever, dude. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

•Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be back in training already following his recent groin surgery, but the man clearly left his brain behind in Holland, because he’s decided the key to a sustained run at the top for Inter would be the arrival of one Luciano Moggi. This is the same Luciano Moggi whose name is connected to virtually every thread of the Calciopoli scandal, who resigned from Juve under pressure last summer, and who is in the early stages of a five-year ban from football. Yes, that guy. Inter, needless to say, were horrified by the Swede’s words, and the media are already full of rumors that he might suddenly have been placed on the club’s “For Sale” list as a result.

•Word on the street has it Milan are interested in Real Madrid’s criminally under-appreciated midfielder Emerson. Despite being awesome, the Brazilian has struggled to settle in at Real, and supposedly has informed the club of his desire to leave. If the rumors are true, Milan are willing to send Real £7 million and Ricardo Oliveira in exchange; since such a deal would not only bring Milan a solid (if aging) midfielder but also get Oliveira off their hands, it sounds like a win-win to me.

The Milan would definitely be a win-win, except for whoever gets Oliveira…

Hey, now, Di Michele’s all right. I wouldn’t mind him staying. Caracciolo, on the other hand, can go and the sooner, the better.

Also, is it bad that I can’t help but giggle at Ibrahimovic’s “open mouth, insert foot” maneuver?

If Di Michele, Amauri and Lucarelli are all on Palermo next year, the rest of Serie A should be quaking in their boots. I don’t care if they have 12 coaches throughout the campaign, that’s firepower.

As for Beckham, I fully expect him to be back in Europe within 18 months.

Sebastien (Frey) has been called up twice before,I think, but has yet to see playing time. So he continues to be listed on the uncapped players list. I don’t see that changing this time around given the importance of the games, although there’s a tiny chance he’ll see time vs. Georgia on the 6th. But I’d be more inclined to think that if Raymond’s going to test another keeper it would be Landreau, who is THE reason Paris SG isn’t being relegated next season.

I’m really having a hard time understanding why Raymond called up 3 keepers and only seven defenders this time around.

Oh, and maybe you’ll know this. Any knowledge of why Sheva wasn’t called up for Ukraine?

Isn’t he hurt, Laurie? He declared himself not fit for the big Man U grudge match a few weeks ago — it could be he’s still suffering from whatever that mysterious injury was.

(And thanks for jogging my memory on Frey, I’ll try to figure out a clarification.)
