Scotland v Azzurri: Well, That’ll Do

By: Martha | November 17th, 2007

Aw.First things first: A 2-1 win on an injury-time winner by Old Man Panucci means three points for the Azzurri: They’re going to be playing games that matter next summer. Woo hoo!

But … what the hell was the call that led to the free kick before the winning goal? You know, when Chiellini decked Alan Hutton, and Pirlo somehow ended up standing over the ball? Man. Alex McLeish was all kinds of classy at the final whistle, getting his team off and not saying a word to the referees, but you know that if that call (whatever the hell it was) had gone the other way and Scotland had won in injury time, we’d all be going out of our minds.

Anyway, the match was ugly, just as everyone expected, and was made even worse by the driving rain in which the entire first half was played. Playing the ball on the ground got tougher and tougher as the half went on, and it was getting to the point where the ball would skid and stop when the whistle finally blew and the rain let up. Happily for Italy, though, they started playing about 10 minutes before the Scots did, and had a laughably easy goal before the second minute was up: Di Natale received a throw-in, dropped it back to Luca Toni in the box, and he wrong-footed the defender and put it in the top of the net. Insta-lead for Italy (and Toni’s third goal in two games against the Scots), who kept pressing for the next ten minutes or so, albeit without anything to show for it.

As the rain kept falling, Scotland settled down and the match did too, being played out most by very muddy men in the middle of the park. The Scots were able to keep possession fine but never looked remotely dangerous, and often went backwards rather than forward when they had the ball. Set plays, however, were something else entirely, and the host scared the crap out of the Azzurri on several occasions. Italy were saved only by an involuntary Zambrotta handball on one, and then, just before half, a characteristically calm goal-line headball by Pirlo. Italy went into the locker room with a deserved 1-0 lead — they weren’t inspiring, but neither were their opponents, and the Azzurri seemed comfortable despite the dire conditions.

The second half started as the first had ended: Apart from a gorgeous early volley by Di Natale, neither team threatened much. Both had shots, but they were on goal very infrequently, and no one was very impressive in the final third. Eventually, though, Scotland realized they were about to spend the summer playing golf, and they started to attack more effectively, actually creating options going forward rather than skipping through and crossing the ball out of bounds. And, just as you started to think the Azzurri had the three pints sewn up, Scotland won a free kick on the edge of the box, and a probably offside Barry Ferguson brought Scotland level by bundling the ball into the back of the net in the 65th minute.

That goal woke up Hampden Park (Man, was it loud.) and the hosts, who needed a win to go through, kept attacking. They should have gone ahead in the 80th minute when Kicking Kenny Miller drew everyone to him on the right and crossed to a wide open James McFadden, who shot wide of a completely open goal. Alex McLeish looked like was about to kill himself, with good reason — that was Scotland’s ticket to the Euros and, after a miss like that, being made to pay is almost inevitable, isn’t it? The punishment almost came from Panucci’s head just minutes later, but he managed to squeeze Pirlo’s deep free kick just wide of the post. Clearly, though, the Old Man was saving his mojo for injury time, when he rose to meet another free kick, this time putting it home and earning Italy their first-ever win on Scottish soil.

[ScotlandIan's match report is up here.]

Edit: I haven’t found any clips yet, but I’ve been told by several people that McLeish’s pitchside class vanished by the time he was doing postmatch interviews. Pity. Also: Highlights are here. (thank you, Marco420).

Yes, the referee made some questionable decisions. However, they (fortunately) did not affect the result. Should Di Natale goal was allowed, with two goals margin, the game would be settled in the first half.

Hail the Don for playing Old Man Panucci instead of Space Ball Oddo !

    Cerberus,

Was it as ridiculous as the disallowed Italy goal in the first half? Was it more ridiculous than the offside Scotland equalizer which gave them a chance? Was it as ridiculous as Scotland losing to Georgia leaving them with backs to the wall. Don’t forget that Cheap is a two way street.

I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. Scots played well and gave it everything they had when Italy sat back and let them bring it but the defense did its job as it usually does. When Italy was pressing and attacking they were awesome. When (I hope) they beat Faroe Islands on Wednesday they will win the toughest qulification group. I have no reason to believe that they won’t do well in the Tournament and they have to be consisdered as a favorite to win it. Like they did in July 2006 when they Silenced the Dortmund Volcano, they went into the Lion’s Den and did what needed to be done.

    World Class the Azzurri are.

Paulo: it’s one thing for a linesman to miss an offside call, or get an offside call wrong - it happens all the time and is a part of the game. It’s quite another for a referee to award a free kick to Italy after an Italian player committed a blatant foul, and another, shameful thing entirely for Italy to be willing accept such a call when the team knew full well it wasn’t deserved. That’s Cerberus’s point.

    Ditto Paolo.

Martha I’m surprised at you when you say “what the hell was the call that led to the free kick before the winning goal?“. As Paolo pointed out, the Azzurri already had a perfectly valid goal (Di Natale) called off in the 1st half, and Scotland had scored with Ferguson blatantly offside at the time of McCulloch’s shot. So if there was anyone who should have felt cheated at the end of this game, it was the Azzurri.

No sweat though: we won, so no harm done. Grandi Azzurri!!!! :))))

Matthew, so what your saying is that the linesman making TWO mistakes isn’t scandalous, but the referee making one mistake is?

As for your last comment regarding accepting the call, get real dude. This is soccer, we’re not playing dolls. In a game you get some wrong calls against you, and you get some in favor. You can scream “fair play” all you want, but when a team gets a foul, no one (and I mean NO ONE) in their right mind will give the opponents the ball back. Just not gonna happen, we don’t live in fairy land.

Being disappointed that Scotland is out is one thing, trying to find any possible excuse to pin it on the ref when the latter made evident calls going the other way, is another.

Show me one team that does not accept a questionable free kick call, before you try to say it’s only Italians who do it.

my favorite thing is Ringhio’s comments,

“I am proud of the qualification we have achieved with this squad,”

“But I am really annoyed because I know we also helped France to go through.”

“Raymond Domenech is always being such a pain and he really did not deserve to reach the finals.

“Now I hope to meet France at Euro 2008 so we can teach them all a lesson.”

    Forza Gennarino!!

Marco, I know errors went against Italy as well. You’ll rarely hear me complain about calls that go against teams I care about, though — I hate coaches and players that bitch endless about the officials, and love to see teams just play on and overcome the errors, like Italy did. Plus, you know any refereeing errors that benefit the Azzurri will only add to the whining about them, so that call at the end killed me.

Paolo - i completely agree with you. it isnt fair that italys 2nd goal was disallowed as it came of the goalie to di natale in an onside position. scotland’s goal was offside but was allowed. stupid. let mcleish complain all he wants because crappy calls were made both ways. it isnt our fault they got themselves into this mess by losing to georgia.

great game overall. both teams had their chance to dominant.

i love rino’s comments!! hahah! soo good! just made my day with that one:)

I’m no expert (I’ve never actually played the game myself) but here’s how I saw it: Chiellini leaned/ran into Hutton with his shoulder and knocked him to the ground; then as Chiellini chased down the (now) loose ball, Hutton reached out with his leg and tripped Chiellini; ref blows whistle and awards Azzurri free kick. I was surprised by the call and asked the guys at the sports bar where I was watching what was up? They replied that it’s fair game to lean into an opponent with the shoulder; pushing with arms and hands is foul. I have no idea if this is true (as I say, I don’t profess any knowledge of the game), but they’re right then the call was correct. Can anyone cite the actual rule?

In any event I agree with the other posters: Italy got the short end of two incorrect offsides calls that resulted in a two-goal swing. At least Scotland had a chance to nullify the refs dubious call at the end by defending the free-kick. Frankly, I wasn’t cheering Panucci’s header because I was hoping for Ukraine to eliminate France on Wednesday.

Italia showed the heart, character, talent and determination to win a hostile atmosphere in horrible weather against a team playing with mad passion and confidence of victory. A sportsman, even if he is Scottish, would acknowledge that. A sportsman would also acknowledge that both sides played with grit and heart, and that BOTH sides were hard done by some calls. The bad calls more than offset, and one could argue Italy was the side harder done. I’ll not enumerate the instances. But I will say that McLeish showed no class with his post-match comments. I again thank the Azzurri for lifting Italians around the world. They played with the heart of lions, and they won with the determination of a world a champion.
To the other Azzurri faithful, be proud of our guys and stop worrying about what a lot hateful idiots have to say. If they spent less time hating us and more time improving their skills, maybe today’s result would be different. But it isn’t. Well done the Azzurri! Forza Italia!

…the free kick was fairly given…chiellini and hutton challenged physically for the ball in a shoulder to shoulder encounter and then Hutton tripped the Italia defender up.

There’s going to be a lot of talk in Scotland, and among Tartan Army elsewhere, about us getting “robbed”, but I have to say, as a lifelong Scotland supporter, that I think the bad calls just about evened out. The most recent bad call happened to us, and happened to be the one that ended what has been an incredible campaign for us, but there was plenty of bad refereeing to go around. Good match from both sides, even if the result was disappointing. I think Scotland would have had a great chance at the match if we weren’t so nervous and defensively confused at the start, but the fact that the team then got itself organized shows that the confidence to take on the world’s best is definitely growing in Scotland. Bring on the WC 2010 qualifiers!

Just to comment on Matthew’s post above. The fact that the linesman got it wrong was very intramental in allowing Scotland back into the game, so I believe that disallowing a valid goal is alot more damaging than giving a free kick in error. Scotland were given every opportunity to win this game and they didn’t so your problem is not with Italy and the officials it’s with yourself and your unwillingness to accept defeat. Your obvious bias against our team makes you blind to these facts, just looking to discredit Italy in any way you can but Italy just won’t lie down and taht pisses you off.

Fred, (et. al), to be honest it’s got nothing to do with Italy ‘not lying down’. Every team should play to the final whistle etc. etc. And if any country can accept defeat, it’s Scotland, trust me on that one. We’ve had more glorious failures than you can count. It’s what we do best! But back to last night’s game:

We’re not bitter. Despite the way that McLeish’s comments read like. Italy didn’t cheat and the officials were equally bad for both teams. Most Scots I know (and since I am Glaswegian and had a bunch of “lucky” mates in Hampden for the game) don’t think that Italy were undeserving of a win. The sour taste is more to do with being so close to a draw (or a win if you consider McFadden’s miss) that would have taken us to a major finals for the first time in 10 years.

The most frustrating point is that we had our chances. That open goal that we missed and the fact that an Italian goal was incorrectly ruled offside. The fact that Pirlo had the presence of mind to be at the goal line to clear and we did not have a man at the back post at the end (allowing Panucci’s goal).

Sure, you can tot up the chances that Italy had and argue that at 2-0 it would have been game over. I don’t disagree.

Any Scots reaction is purely down to knowing that we came very close to pulling off an amazing escape from an incredibly tough group. Nothing more, nothing less. In the meantime, good luck to Italy in the Euro finals; we’ll see in the 2010 WC final… ;-)

Thanks JB, I was just angry at the typical trouble-makers who blame ALL Italians of being poor sports than go ahead and do the same thing themselves. The world is full of these people and I’m glad your not one of them. It’s a shame it had to come down to us and Scotland as I wanted both to go through.
