Thanks JB, I was just angry at the typical trouble-makers who blame ALL Italians of being poor sports than go ahead and do the same thing themselves. The world is full of these people and I'm glad your not one of them. It's a shame it had to come down to us and Scotland as I wanted both to go through.

Fred, (et. al), to be honest it's got nothing to do with Italy 'not lying down'. Every team should play to the final whistle etc. etc. And if any country can accept defeat, it's Scotland, trust me on that one. We've had more glorious failures than you can count. It's what we do best! But back to last night's game:

We're not bitter. Despite the way that McLeish's comments read like. Italy didn't cheat and the officials were equally bad for both teams. Most Scots I know (and since I am Glaswegian and had a bunch of "lucky" mates in Hampden for the game) don't think that Italy were undeserving of a win. The sour taste is more to do with being so close to a draw (or a win if you consider McFadden's miss) that would have taken us to a major finals for the first time in 10 years.

The most frustrating point is that we had our chances. That open goal that we missed and the fact that an Italian goal was incorrectly ruled offside. The fact that Pirlo had the presence of mind to be at the goal line to clear and we did not have a man at the back post at the end (allowing Panucci's goal).

Sure, you can tot up the chances that Italy had and argue that at 2-0 it would have been game over. I don't disagree.

Any Scots reaction is purely down to knowing that we came very close to pulling off an amazing escape from an incredibly tough group. Nothing more, nothing less. In the meantime, good luck to Italy in the Euro finals; we'll see in the 2010 WC final... ;-)

Just to comment on Matthew's post above. The fact that the linesman got it wrong was very intramental in allowing Scotland back into the game, so I believe that disallowing a valid goal is alot more damaging than giving a free kick in error. Scotland were given every opportunity to win this game and they didn't so your problem is not with Italy and the officials it's with yourself and your unwillingness to accept defeat. Your obvious bias against our team makes you blind to these facts, just looking to discredit Italy in any way you can but Italy just won't lie down and taht pisses you off.

Scotland cant complain too much. they didnt do enough to deserve a win and im sure the results later in the week will show a draw wouldn't have helped them anyway

There's going to be a lot of talk in Scotland, and among Tartan Army elsewhere, about us getting "robbed", but I have to say, as a lifelong Scotland supporter, that I think the bad calls just about evened out. The most recent bad call happened to us, and happened to be the one that ended what has been an incredible campaign for us, but there was plenty of bad refereeing to go around. Good match from both sides, even if the result was disappointing. I think Scotland would have had a great chance at the match if we weren't so nervous and defensively confused at the start, but the fact that the team then got itself organized shows that the confidence to take on the world's best is definitely growing in Scotland. Bring on the WC 2010 qualifiers!

...the free kick was fairly given...chiellini and hutton challenged physically for the ball in a shoulder to shoulder encounter and then Hutton tripped the Italia defender up.

Italia showed the heart, character, talent and determination to win a hostile atmosphere in horrible weather against a team playing with mad passion and confidence of victory. A sportsman, even if he is Scottish, would acknowledge that. A sportsman would also acknowledge that both sides played with grit and heart, and that BOTH sides were hard done by some calls. The bad calls more than offset, and one could argue Italy was the side harder done. I'll not enumerate the instances. But I will say that McLeish showed no class with his post-match comments. I again thank the Azzurri for lifting Italians around the world. They played with the heart of lions, and they won with the determination of a world a champion.
To the other Azzurri faithful, be proud of our guys and stop worrying about what a lot hateful idiots have to say. If they spent less time hating us and more time improving their skills, maybe today's result would be different. But it isn't. Well done the Azzurri! Forza Italia!
