Serie A Goals of the Week: Giornata 1
By: Francesco | August 25th, 2009
Serie A is back which means Goals of the Week is back! You can’t always expect the first day of the season to have the greatest goals, as the teams are just starting to get all their summer rust off and haven’t hit their peak yet. But there were still some nice goals for us to watch this past weekend. Goals of the Week after the jump.
Antonio Di Natale vs. Parma - Di Natale scored some beautiful goals on the first day of the season last year and he starts off this season on the right foot as well with this effort. Definitely the best goal of the weekend and it comes against the club that wanted to sign him this summer, Parma.
Adrian Mutu vs. Bologna - He may have some troubles off the field at the moment, but Mutu showed he’s concentrating on the field with this effort. Unstoppable finish.
Alexandre Pato vs. Siena - This is a nicely worked goal. Ronaldinho with an inch perfect pass through the defense to Flamini who lays it across to Pato for the finish.
Alberto Zapater vs. Roma - The Spanish center midfielder scores on his Serie A debut with this perfect free kick. This was the only video of it I could find on youtube. Shot directly from the curva.
Vincenzo Iaquinta vs. Chievo - Perfect assist from Diego on a free kick and Iaquinta with a powerful and perfect header that sails into the upper corner.
Marek Hamsik vs. Palermo - The Slovakian midfielder scores this long range effort to put Napoli level, but Palermo eventually score through a Miccoli penalty to win. I couldn’t find any video of it, so you’ll have to look for it in the highlights. It’s at 1:06 in the video.

Di Natale’s was great. It came as a surprise as I was watching the replay and thought the game would end up 2-1 (ESPN doing a half-assed job of updating the scores during another game).

Why would Di Natale ever have traded Udine for Parma?

They offered him a higher salary, plus the Parma sporting director Leonardi used to work with Udinese the past couple of years. But he decided to stay put.

No Totti…….?
He scored with his back to goal with the side of his foot – on purpose…

Come on asem, as much as I admire Francesco Totti, he basically stuck his foot out and hoped for the best, and it went well. If Erjon Bogdani scored that goal, would you be saying the same thing?

maybe not, francesco – but he’s an ” idol in my eyes, god of the game, heart of the city “
