Serie A to change game times for 2010-2011 season
By: Francesco | June 20th, 2009
The 2010-2011 season will be a little different for Serie A. The collective bargaining tv rights will go into effect which should mean more money for the little teams as the tv rights are shared throughout the whole league similar to the EPL model. But this also means they have decided to follow the EPL model in regards to schedule as well. First, all night games will now start at 8:45 PM instead of 8:30 PM to give them a little more “European” feel (like Champions League games). The 6 PM Saturday game stays the same as do the 3 PM Sunday games. However the one change is now, like the EPL, one game on Sunday will be played before the other games at 12:45 PM. (Which means all of us in the USA watching live have to wake up extra early). I’m sure the fans in Italy won’t like this much either, as that will cut into eating time for most people, and we all know how important that is to Italians. We’ll have to see if this decision actually follows through.

Good point about eating times Francesco. People should not underestimate the importance food-times in Italy.

The Midday kickoffs are intensely annoying (even living in Europe) but I presume the reason behind Italy doing this is the same reason we have it in the Prem, the crowd is less likely (theoretically) to be drunk and cause trouble at 12.

Theoretically maybe, but with noon kick off times in the NFL, most people use that as an excuse to start drinking early.

Its the way we have to go if we want to make up the financial gap. I expect that there will be friday night games by the middle of the next decade and Monday night games shortly after
