Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 23
By: Francesco | February 9th, 2009
The Italy squad listen to Lippi talk while training before the big Italy-Brazil friendly tomorrow. In Serie A action, Inter won again and Milan drew Reggina, which meant Juventus had a chance to get back into second place. A tough Catania side stood in their way, and just when the match looked like it would be heading to a 1-1 draw, Christian Poulsen scored in stoppage time to catapult Juve past Milan. Roma kept their charge to 4th place going as they defeated fellow European challengers Genoa 3-0 at the Olimpico. A late Gilardino goal vs Lazio allowed Fiorentina to stay ahead of the Giallorossi in the standings. Also, Giornata 23 was one of the best weekends of Serie A goals. There are many beauties to admire this week. Results after the jump.

FRANCESCO’S SERIE A GOALS OF THE WEEK
Cicinho vs. Genoa – This is the prime example of a team goal. Look at how Roma moves the ball around before it is finished by Cicinho.
Mirko Vucinic vs. Genoa – Daniele De Rossi with an imperious run through midfield, excellent chip to Vucinic who hits an inch perfect first-time volley that sails into the net.
Julio Baptista vs. Genoa – Baptista closes out a game of great goals with a great goal of his own. With Genoa pushing forward, Baptista takes advantage of the space at the back and bends the ball into the upper corner.
Marek Hamsik vs. Palermo – The Slovakian midfielder scores a nice goal on a first time shot that curls into the net.
Vincenzo Italiano vs. Torino – Italiano is becoming known for these last minute screamers that get Chievo points. Yet another great goal for the midfielder. (fast forward to 2:29 in the video)

Nice little piece from Juventus.com on the friendly today-
Do not call it a friendly. There will be no prize to be won if not that of honour, but when Italy and Brazil meet the encounter can never be free of significance. At 20:45hrs tonight, at the Emirates Stadium in London, the two most victorious national teams on the planet, the current world champions and the 2002 world champions will meet in a sort of play-off for the beginning of this century. Nine world championship titles, the world’s football masters, Brazil, against those who made football nearly their religion, Italy, on the land where football was born, England. Whoever is capable of finding something better raise his hand. Italy and Brazil will meet for the 13th time in history and up to now the statistics see a perfect equilibrium: 5 victories each and 2 draws even though one of these is only so for the statistics since it is the 0-0 in Pasadina during the world cup final in 1994 won on penalties by the verdeoro.
Tonight’s is the 8th friendly but it is not an occasion to experiment new solutions. Dunga and Lippi will field the best formations at their disposal. The former must make do without Kakà, whilst the azzurri coach will not have two pillars at his disposal that is Chiellini and Gattuso. Brazil will probably have Adriano heading it’s attack supported by Robinho and Ronaldinho. Italy will place it’s trust in Toni with Camoranesi and Rossi or Di Natale in addition to the wings. Gigi Buffon will be in the starting line-up and probably also Nicola Legrottaglie with Vincenzo Iaquinta ready to give a hand during the rest of the match.

Brazil, to keep it simple, kicked the crap out of the Azzurri in the 1st half.

That was pretty embarrassing. Friendly or not, Gli Azzurri were thoroughly out played.
