Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 28

By: Francesco | March 16th, 2009

Filippo “SuperPippo” Inzaghi scored his 300th career goal this weekend. Many people don’t appreciate Inzaghi. They say he has no technique. They say he really doesn’t know how to play football. They say he always dives. They say he always complains. But what they don’t realize is that Filippo Inzaghi is one of the greatest strikers of the modern era. You don’t score 300 goals without knowing how to play the game. The man, if healthy, will score goals until he’s 50. He has an innate sense of positioning where he always knows where to be to stick the ball into the back of the net. He’s scored goals everywhere he’s been, and even on the national team, when he was pushed aside by players like Vieri, Totti, Del Piero, Toni, and Gilardino, he managed to scored 25 goals (imagine if he had started more!). Inzaghi has always been one of the my favorite players. He never complains about playing time, he’s always waiting in the wings for his opportunity and when he comes on the pitch he gives 110%. Congrats SuperPippo, and here’s to hoping you score many more goals. Results after the jump.

FRANCESCO’S SERIE A GOALS OF THE WEEK

Giuseppe Mascara vs. Udinese – He did it again. “Mascarinho”, after scoring a goal from midfield 2 weeks ago, scores another stunning volley from 40 yards out that sails into the net.

Alexandre Pato vs. Siena – Pato scores his first goal of the match with a perfect strike from 25 yards out.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs. Fiorentina – Simply stunning free-kick from Zlatan that seals the match for Inter. Frey couldn’t do anything.

Sergio Pellissier vs. Lazio – The Chievo striker does his best Maradona impression as he beats the Lazio defense on his own and chips past Muslera.

Simon Kjaer vs. Lecce – OK, so even Kjaer admitted himself after the game that he was trying to cross it, but it still doesn’t make this chip any less nice to look at.

the first time i watched a football game from the beginning to finish was exactly 11 years ago…bologna vs. juve, that was when inzaghi scored a hattrick and clinched juve’s serie a title
inzaghi and juve has always been my favorites ever since! :D

I used to hate inzaghi when he played for Juventus, what’s wrong with the man’s luck of scoring stupid goals all the time…

When Milan bought him, I was so frustrated, but after seeing the way he scores at Milan, I now understand that he doesn’t have that much luck, it’s more his hard work and his consistency!

    Forza Pippo!

I’ve always liked Pippo, except for the diving. He can keep his same ‘paintbrush’ style of scoring goals without flopping around on the ground. If not for the theatrics he would be a great model for younger strikers.

Ive always defended super Pippo and I amm very happy he has reached a milestone that only strikers like Ronaldo, Batigol and Shearer have.

I’ve always been amused by SuperPippo, can’t dispute his scoring record. The diving irritates me, but he always gives his best. And his celebrations when he scores a tap-in when it’s already 4-0….hilarious.

Hey guys. As you probably know, I’m the Julian who runs the Italy WorldCupBlog (click my name for a link), and I was hoping to get some help from you guys for an upcoming series of posts. I’m asking each writer for a serie A club to email me, if you’d like to, and name 2 or 3 players who you believe should get called up to the Azzurri. Not players that are already a fixture, but maybe young guys who haven’t gotten a call up yet, or older overlooked players who deserve one. If you could email me, that’d be awesome. Much thanks.

Francesco since you kinda blog for all of Italy, if you could name like your own personal top 3, that’d be awesome.

My youngster top 3, based on current form, is
    1) Marco Motta, 2) Claudio Marchisio, and 3) Salvatore Bocchetti

Older players that deserve a call-up: (I would say Matteo Brighi but I think it’s about 95% he gets called by Lippi this weekend)
    1) Marco Marchionni – Italy doesn’t have many natural wingers and Marchionni is one of the few. He always gives his all, and when he’s in form he’s a very good player.

    2) Sergio Floccari – A striker with a mix of everything: power, technique, positioning, finishing, and he’s only getting better.

    3) Gaetano D’Agostino – I know he was called by Lippi a couple of months ago but I still think he’s the best Pirlo sub we have. He controls Udinese’s midfield and is the real heart and soul of their team. Without him they look lost.

    some other honorable mention players:
Tibero Guarente (Atalanta), Andrea Cossu (Cagliari), Daniele Conti (Cagliari), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria), Giuseppe Mascara (Catania), Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo), Federico Balzaretti (Palermo), Manuele Blasi (Napoli)

oh and of course, I’m still waiting for Lippi to call up Antonio Cassano. He’s number 1 on my call-up list. Unfortunately it seems like I’ll be waiting a long time.

Capping Balzaretti and moving Grosso into midfield would solve A LOT of our problems on the left side.

    SUPER PIPPO!!!!!!!!!
this number 9 is a true specialist.
if i was coach, he would be coming in at the 75 min. mark every game… always bound to score a goal or two and always enjoys the celebration!!!! one of the best to put it in the back of the net when you need him!
