Hey, I was wondering, is there a relationship between “calcio” and “calzino” (sock). I know soccer is short for aSOCCiation football, but perphaps…

No, calcio is from calciare, italian for “to kick.”
Who is keeping Hamsik onside in that picture, is it Maldini?

It’s Pirlo keeping him onside.

There’s no way you could expect an assistant referee to see the exact time of both the ball leaving Zalayeta’s head and Hamsik moving behind the defender. You just can’t be looking in two places at once.
I think it’s unfair to suggest the ref made an error by not getting this call right. We only know it’s an error because we can freeze a tv image and draw an imaginary line across the field.
Instead of blaming referees, we should find a way of improving the system that won’t slow down the game.

Waiting for the haters to pile on about the error. lol.
Neil, you pointed out what we all know and why having linesmen is incredibly ineffective. No one seems to want instant-replay instituted, but I think it’s still the easiest and best solution to THIS problem. And I mean solely offside calls where the play lead to a goal. It wouldn’t slow the game down too much because it wouldn’t happen alllll the time, plus it only takes 30 seconds or less to look at this and have complete confidence as to whether he was on or offside.Posted from
