Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 30

By: Francesco | April 6th, 2009

At the winter break, most people had already hypothesized that Chievo would be returning to Serie B next year. But with the arrival of coach Domenico Di Carlo, the Flying Donkeys have played with a reborn spirit in this second half of the season, and have racked up 21 points since the winter break (only Inter, Juve, and Milan have earned more). They now play with confidence and are a difficult team to break down. Now it looks like Chievo will save themselves this season. And a lot of credit also goes to their star player, Sergio Pellissier (pictured). The 29 year old Italian striker had the best game of his career this Sunday, scoring 3 goals against Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico (his first hat-trick of his career). Furthermore, Pellissier was brought up in the Torino youth system, so it was like a personal derby for him. Many of you may not have heard of him until Sunday, but Pellissier has long been a very good striker in Serie A. He’s very quick and his finishing is excellent, he can really put the ball in from anywhere. Chievo are very lucky to have a player of his caliber. Full Results after the jump.

FRANCESCO’S SERIE A GOALS OF THE WEEK

Giorgio Chiellini vs Chievo – The Italian international levels the game at 1-1 after Camoranesi assists with a beautiful heel flick and then Chiellini powers it home with his left foot.

Emanuele Calaio’ vs Lazio – The Siena striker controls with his chest nicely and then a perfect finish with the outside of his boot past Muslera.

Angelo Palombo vs. Napoli – Palombo, back from international duty, puts Samp ahead with this powerful effort from a free kick. Navarro has to take some of the blame but it still was a nice finish.

Massimo Marazzina vs. Roma – Powerful header from the striker, who actually played for Roma back in 2003.

Edinson Cavani vs. Torino – Another nice header, this time a perfectly placed effort into the near corner. Very hard to execute.

FEDERICO MACHEDA

I’m sure most of you have heard, but for those that haven’t this weekend Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-2 and the stoppage time winner came from 17 year old Italian striker Federico Macheda. Macheda is Roman born and was brought up in the Lazio youth system, but since Italian youngsters can’t sign professional contracts before the age of 17 many get “poached” by foreign clubs (Giuseppe Rossi, Arturo Lupoli, Davide Petrucci, Fabio Borini, just to name a few). Macheda was even called up to Lazio pre-season training 2 years ago at the age of 15 but the offer from Manchester United was just to good to refuse and he moved to England. He has been a star for the reserves and Sir Alex gave him his debut yesterday, and he scored a beautiful goal to make his mark. Of course it’s only one goal and we can’t tell if he’ll be a superstar yet, but it surely is a great way to start a career. Here’s the goal:

Francesco, I’m glad you also noticed Cavani. I mean, headers don’t come any more perfect than that…

Federico Macheda scored a wonderful goal for Man. United for the second time. How talented is this player, he is superb. Italian coaches need to take a lesson from the Premier League by letting young talent to play more often.
