Serie A Weekend Round-up: Giornata 6 (Plus Serie B + National Team Call-ups!)

By: Francesco | October 6th, 2008

At the end of the 6th Giornata we still saw surprises. Inter is top of the table, but they share a place with Lazio and Udinese, two squads who have been impressing in this start of the season. Both clubs are putting in good performances and don’t look like calming down any time soon. Inter beat Bologna (with a splendid goal from Ibrahimovic), while Lazio needed a late equalizer from Simone Inzaghi (his first goal in Serie A in 4 years) to draw with Lecce. Udinese comfortably swept aside Torino 2-0. Atalanta continue to impress and continue to look like Del Neri’s miracle Chievo side, while Sampdoria continue to struggle and can’t find the form they had last season (despite two goals from Cassano, the first a real nice one). The Bergamaschi prevailed 4-2. Milan risked losing to a desperate Cagliari side in the Sunday night game but managed to escape with a 0-0 draw. Fiorentina got another goal from Gilardino and another win with there 2-0 victory over Chievo. Roma and Juventus continue to struggle. Roma finished with 9 men and fell to Siena 1-0 (Siena loves to beat Roma), while Palermo won away to Juventus for the first time since the early ’60’s. Reggina and Catania shared the points in Reggio Calabria with a 1-1 draw. The most interesting game on the weekend seemed to be Genoa-Napoli, with the Rossoblu’ once again winning at home 3-2. Full results and national team call-ups after the jump.

NAZIONALE

Lippi made his call-ups for the two October qualifiers vs Bulgaria and Montenegro. Italy will play away to Bulgaria on Saturday, October 11, and then come home on the 15th to play Montenegro in Lecce. There were 4 newcomers to the Nazionale: Christian Maggio, Fabiano Santacroce, Giuseppe Rossi, and Simone Pepe. Del Piero and Cassano were left out.

Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Palermo), De Sanctis (Galatasaray)

Defenders: Bonera (Milan), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Chiellini (Juventus), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Santacroce (Napoli), Zambrotta (Milan)

Midfielders: Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Maggio (Napoli), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Nocerino (Palermo), Perrotta (Roma)

Forwards: Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Pepe (Udinese), G Rossi (Villareal), Toni (Bayern Munich)

I would have liked to see Udinese’s Gaetano D’Agostino called up. He has been controlling the Udinese midfield and with Pirlo and Palombo injured he seemed like a natural replacement.

It was good to see Maggio finally called up and I think he can be very successful with the Nazionale. Santacroce was a surprising call up but shows that he is a talent held in high regard even if he frequently gets into card trouble.

It will be very interesting to see Giuseppe Rossi in action and it seems like Lippi likes him. The big surprise of course is Simone Pepe. The Roma youth product is a hard working player that plays on the wing and attack as well as defends. I think his workhorse nature is what convinced Lippi to call him up.

But to call Pepe over Cassano…

First off, I know there was some debate on the main page about Ibra’s goal. I’m tellin you, yes, a little luck, but there’s also a tremedous amount of skill involved. It’s not the first time Ibra’s scored a goal like that.

Great work again France’…I think i’ll be in Lecce AT the AZZURRI GAME!!!!

Cagliari played an AWESOME game with great pace, and really had Milan running for the hills. In all honesty Cagliari should have taken 3 points from that match.
Cagliari really impressed me on Sunday.

True, Miccoli deserved a look, but he came off injured yesterday. Maybe that’s why Lippi overlooked him?

Wow. I wonder what that means in terms of the the day to day operation of clubs in Serie A and B.

Cross post from my response on the Milan blog:

“Avia, the fight between Serie A and the rest of the professional clubs in Italy has been going on for years, with most of it focussing on television revenue (recall that Serie B did not have a tv contract last season).

I take the latest skirmish as typical of negotiating tactics here, and imagine that a compromise will be reached eventually.”

The likely outcome is for Serie B to become even more marginalised than it is now. Their best chance at getting a real seat at the table was when teams like Juve, Napoli, Genoa, Bologna (and yes, the Viola) were in B; that simply isn’t true anymore and no one thinks it is going to happen on the same scale again in the near future.

If the divisions were to split, then does that mean A will have a new name?

I’d assume so. But I think the problem was compounded a bit when the “big teams” didn’t get a spot on the council.
