Slight Disagreement at Milan, Or: Ancelotti’s a Little More into This Relationship Than Anyone Else
By: Martha | March 19th, 2007
Last Friday, Carlo Ancelotti was busy pledging his long-term future to AC Milan, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that his lifetime goal was to become “the [Sir Alex] Ferguson of the Milan.” (I’m charitably assuming that means Ancelotti wants to stay at the club for 20 years, and not that he’s hoping to turn into an egomaniacal asshole.) That, combined with the club’s recent successes — both in Serie A and Champions League — made it look as if everything was hunky dory on the red and black side of the San Siro.
Today, however, things aren’t quite so rosy on the job front for wor Carlo: It turns out Adriano Galliani is less excited about having his very own Sir Alex than the man who wants the job is. I mean, he loves him and all — Ancelotti played in a great Milan team, and therefore is on Galliani’s list of People About Whom I Always Must Be Gracious — but that new contract? Not so fast, my good man. Uh oh. And, since Galliani is the one who holds the money (or at least gets it from Berlusconi), it’s pretty much up to him, isn’t it? Gulp.
Perhaps Ancelotti should have checked with the boss before he tried to get himself a new multi, multi, multi-year contract? Or, you know, maybe won something this year. Or at least qualified for Europe? Just a thought.
