Something Strange is Going on With That Kid from Jersey
By: Martha | July 20th, 2007
During a press conference yesterday from rainy Korea, Sir Alex Ferguson essentially told the media that he’s willing to let Giuseppe Rossi leave the club if the Carlos Tevez deal goes though. In a rare sign of sensitivity, Sir Alex essentially admitted that the logjam at striker for Man U — which apparently isn’t quite finished yet, as the club have an additional, Milan-style secret target in mind — would make it virtually impossible for Rossi and Alan Smith to get a game. Thought no action is likely to come immediately — “We can make decisions when we like,” said Mr. Self-Important — the fact that Ferguson specifically mentioned receiving offers for Rossi strongly suggests the Azzurrini striker will no longer be a Red Devil once the season begins.
Meanwhile, back in Italy, Parma’s director of sport Gabriele Zamagna was busy announcing his club wasn’t interested in buying any attacking players, Rossi presumably included. Uh … wha? According to Zamagna, the team has a lot of strikers in camp, and they seem content to at least give those players every opportunity to earn themselves regular spots in the team. That said, he didn’t rule out any further signings this summer; instead the implication was that things were set for now and, if after a few weeks a gap is there, then the club will go out and find someone to fill it.
Now, according to the roster on their website, Parma have four strikers — two of whom are teenagers — so you’d think they’re going to need some reinforcement sooner or later; it’s hard to imagine they’re not actively looking right now. So why make this fairly absurd announcement the very day Ferguson opens the door to Rossi’s departure? Is this just Parma being spiteful because Man U reject their earlier bid (thought to be about €10 million), and evilly yanking the one solid offer the English club got for the player the moment they announce he can go? Or is there something more? Perhaps Parma have decided they’re not willing to pay what Man U want, and are saying this now in order to prepare their supporters for the fact that the golden boy isn’t coming back?

Martha, did you see this article? http://www.acmilan.com/NewsDetail.aspx?idNews=49558
Yes, I know it’s not quite a surprise that Milan are looking for a striker, but they seem to be promising the fans that they will be pulling rabbits out of hats. They had better. Promising me that Ronaldo will carry the day just isn’t doing it!

I’m rooting for this kid to get a shot, as last year he proved he has the goods with Parma. It is a bit annoying to hear all of the American fans who are still under the delusion that he will change his mind and play for the US National team (that ship has sailed). I think all of this is Man U trying to get the most return on its investment (and maybe recoup some of their massive transfer outlays from earlier this summer), and Parma taking a calculated gamble that they can still pull it off since they don’t have all that much $ to be working with (10 million Euros is probably their best offer).

I’m surprised that Parma is even able to put up that $10M

Can he even switch to team USA after playing for the Azzurrini?

Muddia, I think he can switch as he’s not yet got a senior cap. Please correct me Mike, RT, tmc, if that’s incorrect.

Ady they’ve been promising those rabbits for quite a while now, though the name of said rabbit changes day to day. I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to believe until I see one hopping around the San Siro pitch.

Yeah a cap for any youth team does not tie the player to the senior squad. once a player is capped his a country’s senior national side then he is bound to that country.
rossi for the usa? won’t happen. agreed that ship sailed before the WC when arena either didn’t meet with rossi or didn’t come across very well with him…i forget the details.
man, i really don’t want to see him at ac milan or anywhere besides san paolo.

I agree it won’t happen, but it IS possible. As far as I’m concerned he doesn’t even need an excuse of being mistreated — who the hell would prefer to play for the US (or any other country, for that matter) over a country with a shelfload of World Cup trophies, if there as a choice?

Rossi has always wanted to play for Italy. He still does. Theoretically, he could play for USA until he gets a senior cap for Italy.
The only way Rossi would change his mind, I guess, would be in a few years if he isn’t getting the chance to play for Italy and wanted the chance to play in the World Cup. But, he seems to be towards the top of the striker pool for his age group in Italy, and with many of the Italian forwards aging (Toni, Del Piero, Iaquinta, Totti’s retirement …), I think he’ll get his shot in the near future with Italy.
