Spanish Press Won’t Let Go of Their Kaka-to-Real Dream
By: Martha | June 20th, 2007
I think the Spanish press’ obsession with Real Madrid’s fantasy pursuit of Ricky Kaka is a bit like the fascination their Italian counterparts have for the Sheva-back-to-Milan saga — both are unlikely to come to anything, but they involve such big names and such fantastic abilities that neither press corp can see it in their hearts to let go. Plus, both men are magnets for attention, and their faces and names will sell papers no matter how little actual information surrounds the words “Kaka” and “Shevchenko.” And so the coverage continues, to the great joy of those of us whose summers would be horribly bleak without the glories of The Silly Season.
So, the latest on the Brazilian: According to Spanish sports paper AS, Real Madrid’s Franco Baldini “has been maintaining permanent contacts” with Kaka’s agent/father (Who ought to be in the process of taking out a restraining order, if he knows what’s good for him.), and won’t leave him alone until he convinces his son to make a move to Spain. Or, in other words, “negotiations continue.” Though Kaka himself is on holiday in New York* and couldn’t be reached for comment on the stalking of his father, AS did talk to spokesman Diogo Kotscho, a man who “speaks with Kaka every day and perfectly knows the position of crack.” (And that’s way more about their relationship than we ever wanted to know.) Like any good spokesman, Kotscho refused to rule out anything that might involve truckloads of cash, and said he was sure his client — who he pointed out could only be bought for a world-record fee — could be just as happy in Madrid as he is in Milan.
Asked to weigh in on the matter, Real president Ramon Calderon told AS the matter is in Kaka’s hands, and that he believe the Milan god will ask the Rossoneri to sell him. (Mmm hmm. Yeah, I see that happening.)
Aaaaaannd cue the 72-point “KAKA TO MADRID!” headlines in Tuttosport. Isn’t this fun?
*Ask commenter Mike about his I-have-a-photo-with-Kaka-oh-wait-no-I-don’t story. Go on, ask him.

Anybody suspecting some big time overreactions? No? Didn’t think so.

Man, I was ALMOST over my little debacle until you brought it up again. Thanks! When I meet Mutu, I’ll be sure to tell him how you’re SUCH a lovely person, and that he should definitely call you but to be VERY careful, as you’re a professional gypsy hunter.
But don’t worry, he might not be scared off - maybe he could be like Carmen and you could be the soldier?
Calciomercato is a lot like “Polio String Cheese”, it’s the best part of calcio, with the calcio.

You need to remember that Real have elections for their presidents and that Calderon is far from being an unbeatable fan favourite when he stands again so he needs the fans to believe that if they keep him he will deliver Kaka.
As long as the fans believe that, he doesn’t actually need to produce it straight away.

That’s true, Pat, and I often forget to consider the fact that Real presidents are always campaigning when they talk about foreign players — thanks for that.
