Suazo Deal (Maybe, Probably) Done
By: Martha | June 13th, 2007
If reports in Italy are to be believed, the Suazo-to-Inter saga is finally at a close (and there was much rejoicing). Apparently the disagreements between the chairmen of the two clubs were worked out in a phone call this week, and all that stands between the Hondouran and a brand new blue and black shirt is a medical.
The financial part of the deal — reportedly about £6.5 million — remains close to the amounts that were being discussed last week; the major issue all along has been which young player(s) would be sent to Cagliari. Originally, the island club wanted Marco Andreolli, Robert Acquafresca and/or Victor Obinna, but Inter were hesitant to release any of the starlets and, in some cases, the players themselves were resisting a move. In the end, it appears an agreement was reached sending Acquafresca and Acquafresca alone down south; since the player is co-owned by Treviso, one assumes Cagliari will take over only the Inter half of the teenage striker.
As discussed last week, this is a great deal for both Inter and Suazo: The Honduran has been consistently productive since he arrived at Cagliari way back in 1999, scoring over 100 goals in 256 games for the club, often with very little support around him. He’s still only 27 and very much in his physical prime, so it’s awesome for him to finally get rewarded for his production with a move to a big club when he could possibly explode into full-blown stardom.
Edit: It’s official.

If he ever plays. He’s now, what, 4th at best on the depth chart? I don’t get it from his perspective.

Call me an idealist, but I really think he’ll play — Macini’s pretty good about mixing his strikers up. I think he’ll make spot starts and come off the bench late, and he can make a huge different even in that position in the team.

So now Inter have Ibra, Crespo, Adriano, Cruz, Recoba, AND Suazo? Definitely no room for Zalayeta’s buddy, the now-seventh-string Ribas who has the honor of having the most badass name on the team:
SEBASTIAN CESAR HELIOS RIBAS
Now I want to change my middle name to Helios, or maybe Apollo. How would “Michael Helios Poseidon ___ _____” sound?

Recoba is gone and Adriano is probably not far behind. That leaves Suazo as part of a deadly trio with Crespo and Zlatan, with Cruz filling in his usual sub role. Hate to say it, but scary.

Suazo shared the Best Foreigner in Serie A award with Kaka last year. Do you think he’ll be happy with spot starts and coming off the bench? He was THE guy at Cagliari and now he’s a sub. He won’t oust Zlatan or Crespoa and if Adiriano gets a clue anytime soon, doubtful - I know, he’ll get Julio Cruz 8-12 games a year substitution duty. I think the marriage is doomed, he can make similar coin elsewhere.

awesome deal! thank god its finally done (supposedly). he’ll probably play in games where inter will have to counter attack their opponents. he’s a great lone striker that gets the job done. all i want now its to get chivu and a new midfielder. hopefully someone takes adri off of our hands. Forza Inter!!!

Chris I will have to agree, and if Tevez comes in as well it will make a half dozen or so quality and very upset strikers. He should have gone elsewhere…

You mean all we get for Suazo is half ownership of Acquafresca? What a joke. Why would our boy Suazo sign for a big club where he isnt guaranteed to play all the time. He should have signed for a different team or stayed where he belongs..in Cagliari.
What are the odds of relegation now? 100%? We need to keep our stars when we get them. These soccer leagues need to do something to help the bottom clubs afford to keep their star players.

Mancini rates Suazo very highly. He’ll definitely get his chances, as do all Mancini favorites. As Ethan says, Recoba is (unfortunately) gone, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Suazo actually supplants Crespo on the depth chart. And don’t forget that Crespo is 32 and Cruz is going on 33, with both showing a maturity and selflessness this past season that indicates they won’t throw tantrums if they see only rotational action. Both have struggled with injuries as well. Also helping Suazo’s cause is that he has characteristics that the other Inter forwards lack (at least with Adriano’s current state).
Gianfranco, as for Tevez, Moratti seemed to suggest that he liked him, but didn’t think Inter needed “600 strikers.” Inter probably only move for Tevez if Suazo’s deal falls through or if another forward leaves.
