Team For Turkey Game Announced; Millions Weep at the Absence of Corini
By: Martha | November 13th, 2006
Damn that Donadoni for not giving into our wishes and bringing Corini into the side. Damn him! No Pirlo, no Gattuso — is there a better moment to give the man a shot? Sigh. To replace Gattuso, Donadoni turned instead to a perhaps more obvious — stylistically speaking, at least (Conini is really a playmaker at heart) — replacement: Milan’s Christian Brocchi, who started in place of Gattuso and scored over the weekend, was called into the squad for the first time. Also making his debut is Roma’s Alberto Aquilani — I have this mental image of Donadoni sitting at his office desk with the Milan-Roma game on, agonizing over the last few names on his teamsheet. Glancing up, he sees Aquilani’s sick pass in the buildup to Roma’s second goal and says “Eureka!” Actually, since everyone who scored for Lazio yesterday is also in the team, maybe I’m onto something here …
In other news, Donadoni thinks Gilardino has returned to form (Really? Since when?), because he’s back in the side, as are (gasp) players who actually play outside of Italy — the Juve exodus has made it almost impossible to keep pretending no other leagues exist. But where the hell are the kids? Why not bring some people up from the U-21 side to give them some exposure to the full team, and see how they perform at the higher level? Me, I’m a big Montolivo fan, but there are surely other youngster for whom a good case could be made.
The full, semi-experimental squad is after the jump; the game will be played on Tuesday in Bergamo.
Gk: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Livorno)
D: Oddo (Lazio), Zaccardo (Palermo), Barzagli (Palermo), Zambrotta (Barcelona), Materazzi (Inter), Pasqual (Fiorentina), Cannavaro (Real Madrid)
M: Aquilani (Roma), Barone (Torino), Brocchi (Milan), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Mauri (Lazio), Palombo (Sampdoria)
F: Rocchi (Lazio), Iaquinta (Udinese), Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Milan)

Apparently, actual form counts for nothing. Corini could certainly have been called up instead of Barone, who has done nothing with a pathetic Torino team. And there are so many better wide players than Camoranesi, like Pellisier.
Then, Iaquinta goes out and Donadoni calls up the wrong Sampdoria striker. Is it just me or is Quagliarella having a much better season than Bonnazoli?
Good call on bringing up some of the youngsters. I think Aquilani has been deserving since last year and Montolivo would make a nice addition or even Rosina. Isn’t that the purpose of friendlies? To look at players you normally wouldn’t look at?

Marco, I know Corini is old, but shouldn’t it be about who is in the best form? Corini seems to be one of the form players in Serie A right now. Granted, he’s no long term solution and I think Donadoni would be well served to promote some of the U-21 players, but that shouldn’t mean he gets overlooked. Just looking at the team sheet, there are players that Corini is playing better than.
