Thank God For Didier Drogba

By: Martha | June 13th, 2007

Didier, stylin'Were it not for Mr. Drogba stirring up the press with tantalizing talk of a move to either Italy or Spain, the rumor mill would be freakishly quiet today and we’d have absolutely nothing to wank about. (So to speak.) But, thankfully, Didier has come to our rescue with his assertion of curiosity about the Wider World of Football beyond the Premiership (Wait, they play the game outside of England? When did this start?), and the rumor mill has gone into total overdrive as a result.

Though the more mature press outlets in England (Read: The Guardian) say right up front that the odds a move this summer are very slim, this hasn’t stopped the speculation, and La Gazzetta dello Sport alone features two headlines about Drogba and Serie A: “Drogba calls Milan,” and “Chelsea striker: ‘I’m interested.’ But Ancelotti prefers Eto’o.” (For what it’s worth, Eto’o evidently does not prefer Ancelotti.) Interestingly, the Drogba issue first came up last Sunday before his musings appeared in the press — Italian newspaper Leggo reported Milan are heading into further Sheva talks (?) with Chelsea, and that they’ll also inquire about the availability of Drogba while there. Curiouser and curiouser!
And … cue an eager, hopeful frenzy at the San Siro, albeit one that will ultimately be disappointed when Drogba stays at Chelsea and scores 200 more goals for them next season. Really, it’s nice that both Milan teams now have African strikers after whom they can impotently lust — it’s these little thing that bring people together.

But then, David Suazo *did* sign for Inter. Because, of course, Inter has no striking options whatsoever. Mutter mutter squeak.

Yeah, that post is next in the queue! (And how much do I love that deal for Inter? Suazo is awesome, and comes WAAAAY cheaper than Drogba ever would.)

He’s brilliant. BTW, do you know if Rolando Bianchi’s still at Reggina?

I believe the last I read the club were going to give hanging onto him their best shot, so I don’t think he’s left yet. A bunch of teams are interested (obviously) including Juve and, assuming theirs wasn’t just a winter flirtation, Fiorentina.

[...] Anyway, there’s no reason to believe Drogba’s not serious about this: 1)the Milan talk has been going on for a while, 2)he’s profoundly unlikely to find a way to deal with being [...]
