That Wail of Agony You Just Heard Came from Milan
By: Martha | March 27th, 2007
Paolo Maldini’s body is falling apart on him and, on the back of yet another doctor’s visit yesterday, he’s sounding more and more resigned to this season being his last. [Insert "Noooooooooo!" and much rending of garments here.] For one thing, his “good” knee is now just as much of a mess as the other one was last season before he had surgery on it, and for another, this season has been much more punishing than he expected, apparently, in terms of intensity, minutes played, and general wear-and-tear.
And now, according to his most recent medical exam (a visit in which Google somehow managed to find something that translated as “usury”), it’s out of the question for him to play two games in a row, presumably for the rest of the season. I mean, damn. Not only is that a blow for Milan — Roma and Bayern Munich on the horizon, anyone? — but it’s a horrible blow for him, as well. Not to mention a very scary sign of just how old a 38-year-old footballer’s body really is. I mean, he’s an old man, limping around the Milan campus, unable to exercise for too long without swelling in countless body parts — football is a punishing goddamn game, people.
I realize Maldini is getting up there and that his retirement is inevitably near at this point, but given his recent optimism about hanging around a bit longer, this is all just a bit hard to take. (And you know I’m not even a Milan fan!) I think we need a moment of silence for his knees, or something. Or a short ceremony lamenting the mere thought of calcio being without his class and ability. Sigh.

You don’t have to be a Milan fan to find this sad. You just have to be a fan of pretty.

Wow, this news is horribly depressing. I’m not sure I can deal with the idea of Paolo Maldini getting older (I’m pretty sure he’s immortal) Sadly, I think this may really be his last season :( AC Milan sans Maldini is a completely unfathomable idea…

If Brett Favre is still moving and firing darts (granted he can’t leave the pocket easily anymore), I think Maldini can hold on for a few more. I found it interesting his comments that he feared surgery would definately end his career. This isn’t 1975. Maybe he can’t get it done properly in Europe but over here, his knees could be good as new in 6 months.

No wailing here. Just a sigh *sigh* of resignation.
Christian is older today than the last time I asked about him at least.

It is impossible think about Milan with out Maldini. I don’t want him to keep playing and spend everyother game on the bench though. Maybe he can save all his health for the last home game and go out well( if he can’t play anymore).

Martha, please do not be using the terms ’swelling’ and ‘body parts’ with reference to God that way while I am trying to eat my lunch. I nearly choked on my sandwich…
*is totally burying head in sand regarding the whole retiring thing, preferring instead to concentrate on daydreams including molto swelling*

*sigh*
Well, I guess everything has to end sometime (although I never thought this day would come).
