The Capocannoniere Race: Or, Class is Ageless.

With a mere eight weeks to go, the race for the top-scorer’s crown is getting down to the wire. Four candidates seem the most likely to take the top spot; two elderly captains, one brilliant transfer, and a man who has already made history.

Toto Di Natale is in a league of his own. The thirty-three year old has shown no signs of slowing down despite his aging, and has wrestled the top-scorer mantle from Edinson Cavani. He scored a penalty against Catania, as he did against Bari. In between he notched twice away at Cagliari, two gamedays after scoring a hattrick against Palermo. Four games and seven goals. The kind of form that, were he younger or English, would certainly make him a contender for player of the year.

Edinson Cavani leads the trailing pack, returning to form this weekend with a double against Cagliari. The second was exquisite, the kind of chip that sends the tifosi in raptures. Three behind Toto, he seems the most likely of challengers for the crown. Napoli will need him to be if they’re Champions’ League dreams are to continue.

Samuel Eto and Marco Di Vaio are on nineteen and eighteen respectively, both sending Inter and Bologna surging up the table. The former is no stranger to scoring goals on big occasions, as he is the only man in history to have won consecutive trebles. The latter however is a bit of an unsung hero for his side, as crucial and potent for Bologna as Francesco Totti to Roma or Alessandro Del Piero to Juventus.

There’s a two week break in Serie A action due to international duty, but once the clubs get back to playing, it seems as if Di Natale may have the easiest time adding to his tally. Udinese are away to the league’s worst defensive side, Lecce. Eto will hope to fire Inter to a win and the Serie A summit in the derby, whilst Cavani will want to hold up Lazio from making progress on Napoli. Finally, Di Viao’s side host Brescia who will be absolutely desperate for points in their journey to salvation.

Why has Toto never been able to replicate this success wearing the blue shirt? Is there something magic in the soil up in Udine?

Is it because the play is so slow in Italy that the old guys can do so well?

If Toto played for a bigger club than Udinese, he could have won player of the year award.

LOL at the “younger or English” comment – too true. It’s impossible not to like Di Natale. Big on fair play, stays at an historically small club because he’s happy there despite big-money offers from bigger clubs, cool last name, etc. I may have a huge man-crush on Eto, but I’m perfectly happy to see Toto top this list again.

i would't be surprised if di natale breaks the 30 goal mark. that guy's always scored a bucket load for udinese.

hoping toto goes past 30! Just love how he plays and handles himself. Love the guy!

And for the record, Ibrahimovic isn't even freaking close. Wow, I hate that man.

  • Toto to win it with 29 goals by the end of the season methinks.

    Cavani in second with 25.
