Transfer Market Bits, Or: A Run on 31-Year-Old Strikers

By: Martha | August 31st, 2007

Scary AlvaroIn a bit of news so shocking it needed to be triple checked, it’s being reported today that a player is actually moving from Manchester City to a Serie A club. (I know what you’re thinking — “What?! Does Sven know about this?”) It appears someone at Man City forgot Bernardo Corradi is Italian, because if they’d have remembered they would never have let him go, and he’s on his way back to Parma on a one-year loan. Parma, who have been seeking depth at striker all summer, will pay the 31-year-old’s million-pound salary, and have the option of making the deal permanent next June, if he’s productive and not too old by then.

In addition, finally making a move is Inter’s Alvaro Recoba, who is now officially a Torino player, if only for the season. If El Chino can regain his form and stay healthy, this move could be massive for Toro, an unfancied team who nevertheless looked solid against Lazio last week and could be greatly lifted by a bit of flair up front, even if it is from an inconsistent 31-year-old. The two teams will meet again next June to discuss Recoba’s future, so he very well could have seen his last day in an Inter shirt (that sniffling you hear is Massimo Moratti, weeping for his departed baby).

Recoba’s departure, meanwhile, means Adriano has moved from sixth to fifth on the Inter depth chart at striker. Woo hoo! It also makes it virtually certain that included in the frenzied last few hours of transfer market activity will not be a deal taking the big Brazilian (I feel like Ray Hudson every time I type that, and it makes me hate myself a little) away from Milan. While Adriano will at least pretend to be happy to have a chance to prove himself, the fact that Roberto Mancini is already talking about leaving him off Inter’s Champions League roster is a pretty harsh blow, particularly since one assumes a reason Adriano wouldn’t go to a smaller club on loan was the lack of opportunity to play in Europe. Big mistake.
