The Latest Out of Palermo — And it’s Not about Guidolin!

As we head into the last weekend of competition, what the press in England call “The Silly Season” (AKA The Opening of the Summer Transfer Market) is just revving up. And, though at times it’s been hard to tell the winter’s mini-Silly Season ever ended, the transfer rumors are percolating afresh — and not just from the big clubs.
Over the last 24 hours or so, there’s been an uncharacteristic volume of non-crazy muttering coming out of Palermo, all of it about who will be brought into the club in an effort to stem the chaos and panic that were so characteristic this season. According to sporting director Rino Foschi, the club are primarily interested in Atalanta’s workhorse midfielder Giulio Migliaccio, who played virtually every minute for the club this year. It’s possible Palermo actually already own partial rights to the player, but even if they don’t, he’s evidently at the top of their list. (Plus, he’s bald, so he’ll fit right into the Palermo midfield.)
Additionally, the club are in search of a replacement for aging goalkeeper Alberto Fontana and, like half the major clubs in Europe, see Livorno’s Marco Amelia as the best fit. Though the odds of Palermo outbidding clubs like Milan and Juve (not to mention all the foreign teams eying the keeper) would seem slim at best, Amelia’s agent claims the player is interested in joining the Rosanero, so perhaps they’ve got an in after all.
Interestingly, Amelia shares an agent with teammate Cristiano Lucarelli who — imagine that — is supposedly also interested in a move to Palermo. While it’s been clear since December that the striker is finally going to leave his boyhood club, Palermo are only the latest in a long list of possible destinations; whether he’s more likely to end up there than, say, Fiorentina or Inter, is anyone’s guess.
Oh, and Amauri? Totally not leaving.
