The Little Airplane Flies Away

Thank you, Vincenzo Montella, for having a nickname so perfectly suited to a transfer headline. Several outlets are reporting this morning that the Roma player is on his way to England, where he’ll finish the season at Fulham. This deal — a six-month loan — has been rumored for a few months, and, though he’s still owned by Roma, Montella will surely be thrilled to be at a club that at least offers him a fighting chance to get into the first team. Oh, and he’s doubtless stoked at the opportunity to play with a bunch of Americans (oddly, they’re converging on Fulham). Ahem.
Fulham are expected to announce the deal on their website later today, and hopefully there’ll be one of those fancy introductions forthcoming, where the player wears a team scarf and juggles for the press and the 30 fans who turns up for such a thing (keep your eye on Sky Sports news for all the highlights). No matter how he’s unveiled, this has got to be a great deal for Montella. At this point, all he wants to do is play: He’s 32, and must be increasingly aware of his age — he doesn’t want to waste any more time sitting on the bench. Fulham are midtable in England, have a young, sharp, ambitious manager, and just drew with Chelsea, so things could be a hell of a lot worse. They’ve scored 22 goals in 22 games and are looking for scoring, so it looks like a good match. Fingers crossed Montella can make a difference in London — it’ll be awesome to see him celebrating again.
