The Man Cracks Down on Zamparini, Or: That’s What You Get for Speaking Your Mind, Punk

By: Martha | November 29th, 2006

RosettiYou know how we talked yesterday about Palermo bigman Maurizio Zamparini pulling out the big corruption guns while discussing the (in his humble opinion) horrendous officiating of his club’s loss to Inter last weekend? Well, as you might expect from a league trying really, really hard to prop up that pretty facade of legality and rules that was cobbled together after the World Cup, Zamparini’s carefully calculated decision to connect the performance of (international, many times over) referee Roberto Rosetti with last summer’s Calciopoli scandal has come back to haunt him, and he’s being investigated by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. Because if you say mean things about the totally, utterly clean officials in the world’s least corrupt football league, you get your ass kicked. Legally speaking, I mean. Did Zamparini not know that saying mean things about a fairly bad official actually “could directly damage the prestige, reputation and credibility of the entire Federal institution?” Yeah, that’s right: One minute you’re just venting about some bad calls, and the next you’re bringing down the government!

If found guilty of whatever the official term for “talking shit” is, Zamparini could be fined, and Palermo itself could be punished. Yes, it appears the team could be docked points for complaining about losing points unfairly. Oh-ho-ho, the irony. (And I’m sure Palermo fans will be laughing uproariously as they burn various authority figures in effigy.)

To be fair, Rosetti’s usually not bad. I saw a couple of his games in the World Cup and he refereed Bremen-Barca this season in the Champions League. A bit fussier than I’d like, but not atrocious.

(When it comes to referees, when the Italians ones aren’t corrupt they’re actually pretty good, IMHO. Okay, Farina who did Barca-Chelsea wasn’t great, but they’re much better than Spanish ones overall.)
