The Managerial Revolving Door Hits Messina
By: Martha | April 2nd, 2007
Is there another league in the world in which so many managers are fired and then rehired later in the season? Because it just happened again in Serie A which, based on my highly suspect memory, makes three such occasions just this year. I mean, there are a lot of incestuous leagues in which the same group of managers wander around getting fired and rehired on a regular basis, but that’s usually by different clubs, not by the same damn place that found them unworthy just a few months before.
In the case of Messina, Bruno Giordano was canned barely two months ago, after the team lost to bottom club Ascoli during week 21. At that point, shortly after the chairman had called Giordano and assured him his job was safe (of course), he was summarily removed and replaced by Alberto Cavasin. At the time, the club had gone 12 games in a row without a win and were third from the bottom. Where are they now? Third-bottom. Under Cavasin, Messina have picked up a scant eight points from nine games, and ownership has apparently decided their chances of survival are better with the devil they used to know than with the one currently sitting on the bench. As a result, they showed Cavasin the door and turned the team over to Giordano (again), whose 16 points in those first 20 weeks suddenly look much better. Messina travel to Lazio next weekend, not exactly the place a struggling club wants to go to find some luck.
