The Money Splashes in Rome
By: Martha | January 9th, 2007
Over the weekend, Luciano “Strikers? We Don’t Need No Stinking Strikers!” Spalletti was rewarded for his magic at Roma with the offer of a contract extension that will earn him £1.4 million for each of the next five years. Though the manager’s not actually signed the contract yet, Roman papers are quite certain the deal will be done soon — hey, President Rosella Sensi says she and Spalletti are “in complete agreement on everything,” so don’t think for a second that it’ll fall apart. (Also: The immature among us will say “Really? Everything?” and cue porn music here.) While it’d be a shock if he instead elected to keep his options open, I wonder when Spalletti will get the itch to go back to a smaller club and work a miracle like he did at Udinese.
On a slightly less substantiated front, meanwhile, word on the street is that Brazilian scoring machine Adriano is suddenly the object of Roman affection, so much so that he just might become their signature Big Summer Signing this year. Yeah, sounds crazy to me, too. Not to say that if Adriano has really regained his form he won’t be a huge threat for anyone, but it’s hard to imagine him fitting into Roma’s current (and very successful) system. What’re they going to do, trash everything they’ve been doing and play with a giant target man up front? Please.
