The Serie A Table without Refereeing Errors

By: Francesco | March 5th, 2009

So yesterday I was browsing around Italian Goal.com (the only version of goal.com worth reading since they just post articles from other sources instead of making stuff up like the english version), and I came across this article. It’s almost every week that we constantly hear complaints from all teams about referee errors. Many blame head of referees Pierluigi Collina for putting together such a young group of inexperienced referees, while other just blame the referees for having a fear of making calls against the big sides. So the Observatory of Refereeing Errors (who knew that even existed?) in collaboration with Adiconsum came up with an idea. They created a Serie A table where points gained from referee errors were taken away to see who has taken most advantage of these situations. According to the Observatory, there have been 163 referee errors so far which have led to 171 points being in question because of these errors. And even though Mourinho keeps saying other teams are favored by referees, the study shows that Inter have in fact taken the most advantage of these errors. Serie A table after the jump.

So here is the Serie A table with points from referee errors taken away. Milan would actually be in first place, with Fiorentina 2 points behind in second. Juventus would be third, and Inter would fall to 4th place. In the middle of the table Udinese would improve to 8th, while Lazio would fall down the table. Sampdoria would improve their current position, Bologna would remain even, and Reggina would escape last place and improve to third from last and fighting for safety:

1a: Milan 53 +5
2a: Fiorentina 51 +5
3a: Juventus 50 -3
4a: Inter 49 -11
5a: Genoa 46 +1
6a: Roma 45 +1
7a: Cagliari 40 +2
8a: Udinese 40 +6
9a: Palermo 39 +3
10a: Napoli 39 +4
11a: Lazio 39 +1
12a: Sampdoria 36 +4
13a: Atalanta 35 -1
14a: Catania 33 =
15a: Siena 31 +3
16a: Torino 24 =
17a: Bologna 23 =
18a: Reggina 23 +5
19a: Lecce 18 -4
20a: Chievo 17 -6

Compare that to the current Serie A table:

1. Inter 60
2. Juventus 53
3. Milan 48
4. Fiorentina 46
5. Genoa 45
6. Roma 44
7. Cagliari 38
8. Lazio 38
9. Atalanta 36
10. Palermo 36
11. Napoli 35
12. Udinese 34
13. Catania 33
14. Sampdoria 32
15. Siena 28
16. Torino 24
17. Bologna 23
18. Chievo 23
19. Lecce 22
20. Reggina 18

The Gazzetta did this last year and found a similar result. Milan was getting screwed, Juve was getting especially screwed (glad the rigori flood stopped) and Inter was 15 points more than they should have. Inter also hasn´t conceded a penalty in over a year. Coincidences?

These kinds of studies don’t reveal anything. How can someone determine the correct extent of a ref’s error? Wouldn’t all games turn out completely different if proper ref decision were made at the right time?

And who is this Observatory? How are they qualified to determine what is a ref error and what isn’t? Even with TV replay there’s still so much debate about right and wrong calls.

inter fan eh? you do have a point however, but some of these corrections have an obvious result: penalties given/not, offside goals allowed/not, punches to the stomach in the penalty box disciplined/not…

OK, in a 0-0 game if an offside goal is incorrectly given in the 80th minute, how can you be certain the game would have ended 0-0 if not for the bad call? Also, if the team that suffered the injustice came back to tie it 1-1, how do you know they would have scored if the offside goal was rightfully disallowed?

I agree that incorrect ref decisions have a huge impact on the game, but you only get a result after 90+ minutes

one question, though: how can the points awarded be more than the points taken away?

I picked up on the math too: 40 more points awarded, but only 25 taken away. It seems that on the whole referee errors – according to this study – would have resulted in 15 more draws-becoming-wins than wins-becoming-draws. That’s the only way I can make sense of it. If a tie game where 2 points were awarded turned into a win for one of the teams, it would create one extra point in the table. This must have happened 15 more times than the reverse, 3 point games turning into 2 point draws.

Anthony, that’s not Atari, that’s actually a feature most Italian tv’s have called ‘teletext’ where you press a button on your remote and you can check up to date news and sports news and even buy ringtones and stuff. However it was only good in the 90s and early 2000s because with all the technology of Sky and such now it’s not really needed.

Laurie, thanks but I’ve learned since I started doing the Serie A Round-ups to keep a word document with all the links so it becomes a simple copy and paste job.

Its an interesting idea, but it is flawed. It doesn’t take into account that games would be changed by goals going certain ways and what have you, and you wouldn’t know how a team would react in that exact situation and so on. It is interesting to see Inter having the lions share of the luck (presumably “luck” in Italy!) though.

Well, it does lend credence to the theory that Inter get all the calls. 11 points they’ve earned through referee errors is atrocious.

However, it is clearly not just that the refs are favouring the big sides. Apparently Chievo has 6 points they shouldn’t have and Lecce has 4 ill-earned points, while Milan and Fiorentina should each get 5 more. So that takes that argument away from the Inter fans. If anything, it shows that an investigation into Inter would be warranted.
