The Weekend In Review

By: chris | February 17th, 2008

pozzi.jpgThe gap has widened at the top while absolutely nothing else was decided but Milan owned players are cursed. Hooray.

Saturday

Inter 2 - Livorno 0:
Huge surprise, I know. David Suazo turned into David Swayze and scored two goals in four minutes to make things quick and easy as the Nerazzurri open up an 11 point lead. David had the celebration of the weekend by holding up two fingers after number two just to make sure everybody in the stadium knew how many goals he had scored. Nice to know how he feels about the intelligence of his fans.

Juventus 1 - Roma 0:
Aside from one moment, it was an even game, with Juventus controlling the first half and Roma taking the other. A Pavel Nedved dive (it was a dive, there’s no debating it, he got hit on the way down) allowed for a free kick which was too close for anybody to miss. And there’s your game.

Parma 0 - Milan 0:
The not-so-triumphant return of Kaka and Ivan The Freaking Lunatic meant absolutely nothing as we got ourselves a stalemate at the Stadio Tardini. Highlight of the game was Dida being stretchered off of THE BENCH after pulling his ass, or something, trying to stand up too quickly. Time to pack it in, Nelson.

Sunday

Genoa 0 - Sampdoria 1:
The “away” team took the spoils, on the back of Antonio Cassano, who was simply magnificent. Only his teammates weren’t as maginificent and it took until the 87th for someone to find the back of the net, eventually Christian Maggio did the deed. Nothing like a late 80’s goal in a city derby.

Napoli 1 - Empoli 3: If you called this as the most dramatic game of the week you deserve some type of prize. Nicola Pozzi looked superb in scoring a couple of goals, but paid dearly by snapping a ligament on the second and will likely be out for the rest of the year. There were matching red cards for Marcelo Zalayeta and Felice Piccolo for a “scuffle” in the tunnel during half times, but as you can see by the vid (1:10), it looked like nothing more than a lovetap from MZ and a whole lot of nothing from FP. Empoli added a 3rd after Maurizio Domizzi was sent off as well. You may just bump into Eddy Reja in the unemployment line this weekend. Give him a hug.

* - Alright, it’s all but confirmed Reja soon to be out. He has been given The Dreaded Vote of Confidence.

Reggina 1 - Udinese 3:
Uhhh, no big surprise here. Reggina is making a deposit on their ticket to Serie B.

Palermo 2 - Cagliari 1:
Franky G can breathe a little more easily for at least a week, as he managed to avoid a severe loss of employment with a victory over the Sardines, despite Amauri and Fab Mic doing things besides playing. (Fab Mic I dunno, but we’ll assume Amauri was faxing his updated resume to The Artist Formerly Known As G14.) Edison Cavani scored twice, once for the pinks, once for the redblues, which was nice of him. See, everybody feels bad for Cagliari.

Lazio 3 - Atalanta 0:
This one is just completely inexplicable and beyond words.

Fiorentina 2 - Catania 1: One of these days I’d like to take a trip to Firenze and measure the size of their pitch, because it always seems massive to me (which is appreciated, no doubt). Juan Manuel Vargas kicked his pricetag up a little bit with a stroke from just outside the box before Adriana Mutu matched it 10 minutes later with his own.

Siena 0 - Torino 0:
The Luis Figo went off without a hitch, as Torino pulled off their 1,793rd draw of the campaign, and Siena managed to creep outside of the relegation zone for the week. Be thankful this game won’t be played again this season.

The full goals of the weekend (crappy quality, will replace once a better option becomes available):

This whole Short sleeves with gloves thing needs to stop at Udinese. It makes no sense !

    So much for being unbiased.
    Lay off Milan.

Umm, I like Milan. (At least much better than the other 2 of 4.)

And what the hell was “biased”? The draw part?

It’s true, Mele, it has nothing to do with being biased (I’m a Milanista through and through)… Dida is freaking embarrassing.

Dramatic? The Napoli-Empoli game was AWFUL. If Reja keeps his job, it will be amazing.

Mele, even if you’re a diehard Milanista you must see the humor in Dida getting injured on the bench.

Whatever his faults as a keeper, ye can’t deny Dida is bloody entertaining, even when not on the pitch!

Lisa, I daresay 3 red cards, 2 in the tunnel, and a snapped ligament on a goal is “drama”. Maybe not a “hunker-down-with-a-nice-merlot-and-clear-your-evening dramatic” but dramatic nonetheless.

In general, it seems you give Milan a lot more sh*t than other teams, that’s all.
No need to get all worked up, either.

As for Frankie G, watch him relegate Jankovic back to the bench after his great performance on Sunday. I mean, after all, he had no choice but to give the kid a start finally…only to replace him with an underwhelming Bresciano.

Man, I’ve defended Guido so much this season, but now, even I am getting increasingly frustrated.

Some think Saturday night’s match was quite dramatic. I noticed your negative spin on Juve’s performance, including an unnecessary jab at ADP’s blast, and also notice an absence of mention that Roma have now dropped 2 of 3 in serie A. No Lazio recap. Chris, you are just not up for this position.

It didn’t seem that dramatic, Chris. Well, except maybe Pozzi’s injury. And that wasn’t the good kind of drama.

Mele, what brought on the bias complaint if it wasn’t the Dida thing? All he said other than that was that your team didn’t exactly sparkle this weekend. Given the 0-0 scoreline, it seems like a fair assessment. I’m honestly puzzled here.

Marco, you’ll also notice I didn’t write anything about Reggina - Udinese. Would you like 5,000 words on each game? Would that appease you? Quit checking your sense of humor at the door. This isn’t Reuters.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess on paper it sounds dramatic, but watching not as much. (The video link still leaves me confused as to what went on that was bad enough to get the two players sent off. A shove and the two getting separated right away = red cards?.)

Is this Chris’ first weekend round-up? Nice to see he starts it all off with about as much class as I gave him credit for having. Insults and bitterness, mmmmm deeeeeelicious.

Show me “insults and bitterness”. Because the only subject in question is “too close for anyone to miss”, which wasn’t a shot at ADP, who I have a lot of respect for, but the truth.

Sounds like too much of a sense of serious?

That’s fair, sticking his boot out while on the ground knowing their history (assuming the ref did as well), wasn’t all that smart.
