Things We Learned & Hope To Learn From Serie A

Things We Learned last Weekend In Serie A
Cesare Prandelli is sexified.
Look at that outfit. Purple on purple. Who the hell can pull that off besides Cesare? Nobody. That’s who.
Now, if only he could bestow some of that superior fashion knowledge on Papa Waigo and his mankini we’d be all set.
(I stole Marco’s pic.)
David Pizarro and Per Kroldrup are in L-O-V-E.
I simply cannot muster up any words to describe this photo other than “thank you”.
Emanuele Calaio needs more playing time.
I don’t care why he was there, how bad the D was or what color panties Marco Amelia was wearing on Sunday: Calaio needs some more PT. If only to boost his pricetag for the summer.
If Torino should be down 19-0 in second half injury time, they’re gonna draw.
No matter what, they’re gonna draw. 4-1 down after 43 minutes and they were playing with one whole striker. FF 45 minutes later and they’ve got a point despite a 1 goal per game average for the season. That’s 14 draws in 24 games. Last year only one team had more than 14 draws in the entire season (Reggina). They’re now on pace for 23 draws this season.
Don’t head the ball over your keeper’s head.
Most of us know that. Thomas Manfredini didn’t, though he surely does now. (0:45)
Things We Hope To Learn From Wednesday’s Fixtures
The Serie A season is still on.
I love relegation battles as much as the next guy, but the scudetto race is where it’s at, and if Roma loses to Inter the season is unofficially officially over. A Giallorossi win at least makes things interesting. Regardless of who you root for, nobody wants the season to be over in February. That’d be wicked uncool. (And yes, I’d say the same if Roma and Inter were to swap places.)
Cagliari is one step closer to safety.
Speaking of relegation battles, The Little Team That Could, But Probably Won’t is taking on fellow battles Siena in your ever so accurate “six pointer”. I find it incredibly hard to dislike most of Cagliari’s players and almost feel sorry for them, having to play Serie A with a Serie B roster.
Roberto Donadoni will be picking a striker from Genoa for Euro 2008…..
The question is: which one? Borriello’s debut in House of Savoy azzurro was less than stunning, but his domestic form has been scintillating. Antonio Cassano has brought back the glory days (I can’t believe he’s only 25 and yet we can still call them “glory days”), but we all know about his 5 year old brain. Another performance from either really has to seal the deal that one will be going, right?
Parma and Udinese channel all that disappointment and aggression into another thriller.
The two teams who had the most disappointing defensive results this weekend will be going toe to toe at the Tardini. Parma dropped a 3 goal lead to offensively challenged Torino while Udinese gave up a 5 spot to Genoa at home. I say 6 goals apiece will do just fine.
The refereeing in Serie A has improved a little bit.
Because, quite frankly, it sucks ass.

What do Marco Amelia’s undies have to do with anything? Is someone claiming Calaio only scored cause Amelia’s lucky rocketship underpants were in the wash?

Alright, you provided a stunning picture of Prandelli, but now I want one of Papa Waigo and his shorts! Why, why did I have to miss this match? It had so many talking points, mostly about the fashion.

Obviously Calaio’ is a huge talent but until last weekend he was ineffective when he was called on. Before Sunday Napoli’s other bench striker, Sosa, had 5 goals in similar minutes compared to Calaio’s 0. You can’t fault Napoli for going with in form players. Having said that, let’s hope Calaio’ stays in form.

The best Prandelli outfit was this past weekend when he decided to wear matching outfits with assistant coach Gabriele Pin. I remember a camera shot on both of then on the sideline talking and the both had on blazers with purple turtlenecks.

I think it would be absolutely nuts if Cassano played for the national team again, with his history of meltdowns/breakdowns. BUT… he’s one of the few players that makes me hold my breath whenever he touches the ball. I say let him play in a few warm-ups and then see what happens…

ps- as a part-time viola fan, that’s one tricky color to work with… Francesco- I saw the shot of Prandelli and the other guy you’re talking about on the Fox Soccer Broadcast, and lost it when the commentator mentioned their fashion statement.

Caliao back to Palermo!!!

Neil, no, you can’t, but I think it’s much harder for players to get in form coming off the bench for 6 straight months. He certainly deserved a start or two somewhere. It probably would’ve helped immeasurably.

the horrendous purple rollneck & shiny puffajacket combo is just extraordinary, the only explanation is that he is being paid to wear it. Possibly by a manufacturer of dodgy jackets, possibly by the other 19 managers in a secret consortium with the sole purposes of having a good laugh.

If your having trouble getting regular updates on the Italy blog I’d be more than happy to split time with my Parma blog and help out. I read every single Italian soccer news site every morning anyway, might as well share the info with the rest of the world. :)

If you guys read the other day, I’m moving. I think Martha had a few of these stretches as well.
Francesco, we’re working something different out. I’ll be in touch with all the writers eventually.

Guys, the kid cant distinguish reality from fantasy .. Theres no way he can put unbiased news out anyway… He needs to stay on the Roma page.. Someone else could do the job… Martha? C’mon, Ill take your part-time over this bullshit anyday

tito, maybe you should check to see who wrote those.
kevin, I like Martha, and I don’t care about this, but how unbiased was this page with her? All Inter and Viola news all the time? Think for a minute one of these days, would ya? (And if you’d like the real reason why I’ve been taking some breaks, as moving is only a fraction of it, you’d probably feel pretty terrible about any criticism.)
And I believe I mentioned to everybody February was a lost month, there will be technical changes to the site soon, and that quite a few things will change. Patience, people.

chris - I wasn’t trying to come after you (or anyone else) … I was just lamenting the lack of posts as I enjoy them so much. My apologies and I hope your move and other circumstances go well.

no worries, tito, most of that wasn’t directed at you, anyway.
