Tinkerman on the Road Again?

By: Martha | May 15th, 2007

My sweet Tinkerman.Though everyone in England (Well, to be fair, it was really pretty much just everyone, full stop.) ignored Claudio Ranieri during the two years he spent sitting on his couch after parting ways with Valencia in early 2005, his miraculous success with Parma suddenly has him back on the Premiership radar screens. So much so, in fact, that just hours after Manchester City sacked Stuart Pierce, the Tinkerman was instantly installed as the bookies’ favorite for the job, and was listed at even money by the end of the day.

While at first glance this looks like a case of a guy with flashy, short-term success becoming the media’s knee-jerk replacement for anyone who gets fired, the fact is that it might be a bad fit. Pearce struggled with a lack of funds at Man City, and Ranieri has worked miracles at Parma without spending a penny, utilizing young players a few stabilizing veterans. Once major difference, though, might be where those young players come from — Parma has a fabled youth set-up and has provided Serie A with stars for years; it would surprise me if Man City has anything similar on which he could build. (Plus, he’d have to speak English there, and you know how the tabloids like to mock.)

Hopefully Ranieri will stick around — he’s got to wonder what he could do at Parma with a full season and another player or two, and having his passion and weirdness around is always going to be good for Serie A. Now if only we could get Serse Cosmi promoted, we’d be all set …
