Today’s Roundup of Dubious Transfer News
By: Martha | June 20th, 2007
As is being discussed here in the comments, over at the Roma site, and everywhere else on god’s green earth where people love calcio, today is the day on which co-ownership deals self-destruct, so representatives of all Italian clubs are locked in Milan’s Ata Quark Hotel, either working out agreements for their shared players, or writing bids on pieces of paper in an effort to win them via blind auction (RomaChris put together a shockingly understandable explanation of the absurd system, for those of you who understandably find it a bit impenetrable). Though negotiations will have closed by the time this post goes live, you can see what transpired — rumored and real — by checking Tuttomercatto.
That said, here are some highlights, lowlights, and items totally unrelated to auctions or hotels.
•Now that David Suazo has (maybe, possibly) signed with Milan, clubs are once again circling the club’s Alberto “I’m Only Ahead of Oliveira on the Bench and He’s Utterly Useless” Gilardino, depsite the striker’s entirely unconvincing claims that he’s staying in Milan. According to today’s reports, both Juve (whose interest has been discussed in the past) and Fiorentina have him in their sights, with the latter offering a probably doomed £10 million bid for the £17 million-valued striker. Though Channel 4 seems convinced Gila would rather go to Juve, his old Parma coach Cesare Prandelli is on the bench in Florence, and the temptation to re-team with him could possibly factor into a move.
•Livorno’s Marco Amelia, probably the most-wanted keeper in Italy now that Gigi Buffon has resigned with Juve, major may not be headed to Lazio. Though his agent proudly told the papers yesterday that a move to the Rome club was likely in the cards, Lazio personnel reacted to the reports with surprise, something that’s never a good sign in prospective employers. For what it’s worth, Maurizio Zamparini has declared Palermo’s distain for the keeper, news which I’m sure has Amelia near tears.
•According to Tuttosport (pick up that huge grain of salt now), Almiron’s long-rumored move to Juve is just seconds away from completion; La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting Empoli will receive €7-8 million Euros as well as the co-ownership of three youngsters in exchange. In other Turin news, they’re inching towards the acquisition of Lyon’s Portuguese midfielder Thiago Tiago, and the French club itself saying it’s only a matter of time before the deal is official.
•Milan’s young, Italian passport-holding Argentine defender Leandro Grimi will be spending next season on loan with Sporting Lisbon, which will mean piles of experience for the 22-year-old. And, since he arrived in Milan claiming to be the heir to Maldini, he’s got some work ahead of him.
•Now that Zico’s in charge there, Fenerbahce are stockpiling Brazilians like they’re going out of style. First, Roberto Carlos. Next, the world Adriano, albeit only on loan. How about this: Whoever shows up first at the guy’s house in Brazil can have him. Just bring some vodka, that should be enough to lure him into the moving van.
•In order to prove the people at Inter are a bunch of dirty liars, Cagliari are prepared to provide phone record-proof of their desperate attempts to sell David Suazo to the Nerazzurri. Damn. Your move, Massimo.
•I find this one sort of impossible to believe because the size of the bid seems against everything Fiorentina stand for, but it’s being reported they’ve made a €15 million bid for Liverpool’s Mohamed Sissoko, last mentioned on these shores as a possible gift from Claudio Ranieri to his new club.
•Here’s a shocker: Inter are suspected of sketchy accounting practices between 2003 and 2005. It’s an open secret in Italy that everyone overvalues low level players to make their financial situations look less dire; Inter are surely as guilty as anyone else.
•And, finally, just because this will never, ever end, Roma claim there have been no talks with Inter about Cristian Chivu.

There’s a fucking English version?!?!?!
You mean I’ve been painstakingly translating every piece of crap that comes through the Roma section of Tuttomercatoweb.com? Goddamnit.
I just won back like 2 hours of my day.

It’s Tiago, not Thiago.
Is there anyone Fiorentina hasn’t been linked with?

I agree that the fee for Sissoko is a bit higher than I would expect Fiorentina to pay. But, he’s 22 years old, and there has been some scuttlebutt that Liverani is on his way out.
I was always impressed with Sissoko during his tenure with Valencia and at Liverpool (lots of competition there in defensive midfield with Mascherano and Xabi Alonso). I think it would be a good move, as Sissoko is a player coming into his own with a lot of good years in front of him.
As far as Gilardino, hopefully this is an attempt to get a guy at a discount, but I can’t see that happening. First of all, I think Gilardino’s ego would never accept playing for an Italian team besides Inter, Milan or Juve. His agent’s comments are to this effect. But, looking at the statistics he’s compiled, he’s better than I though. Plus, he scored 23 goals in each of his last 2 seasons at Parma under Prandelli, so that is nothing to sneeze at. But, I’m still not much of a fan of his, for sure.

I love how Every Article Headline leaves out the fact that Milan, Samp & Reggina are also being Investigated for the same matter as Inter. I love how big deals are made over little matters - According to the latest reports, the Club(s) does(do) not risk any penalty…. at least so they say.
Mr. Cellino, Good Luck buddy….. Buona Fortuna!! Should be having a team that can stay out of the relegation zone.
I really do hope L’Imperatore does not move anywhere. And I really do Hope his BOMB of a left foot hearts of every Inter hater out there :-) The kid will smarten up & find his form. I just hope he is in Nerazzurro when he does.
I CANNOT WAIT for the new Campaign to begin!!

As far as Inter goes, without my Roma bias involved, considering all that cash Moratti has up there the fact that they only have 2 asterisked titles to their name over the last however many years is really a major failure. The fact that it took a wide ranging scandal for them to come into their own is really disappointing. They should have been competing at a much higher level long before Calciopoli. You can say they would have won anyways but I don’t know too many people outside of the Nerzaurri side of the San Siro who would agree. Brace yourselves…..they could take a lesson from Berlusconi.
Luckily, Roma doesn’t have that problem. They don’t have any money so nobody expects much from them. :)

Asterisk this Asterisk that, both seasons are done. Can’t change the facts about either of them. The old cliche, “It is what it is.” No one really celebrated the title they were given. This past season to do what they did, points or no points taken away, was an accomplishment. Anyone can put any asterisk they want beside it. Everyone had the fair chance to win 3 points in every game played this past season and 17 straight wins (30 overall) is extremely hard to do under any circumstance. Its been argued that the level of play in Serie A has diminished over they years, but hey, the 19 other teams all faced the same schedule and had equal oppurtunity to win as many games as Inter from the beginning. By this I am not saying everyone had the fair “opportunity” to obtain as many points as they did, but they could have won games. I am well aware of all the let downs we have endured and it was diasppointing no doubt. But I love the club and will defend them when I can and I just hope they do well from here on in. People can’t be writing them off for next year already. It’ll be a tough go that’s for sure and everyone has their respected opinions. When it comes to Inter, seemingly the most hated team, it just seems everyone throws in that extra little kick…. nothing personally taken or dished of course. Anyhow the blog is great and the enthusiasm & the fans of the sport is awesome.

Paolo, have to agree with you about the media focusing on Inter’s involvement in this (potential) scandal. And my favorite Serie A blogger is doing the same thing: Shame on you, Martha (j/k)! Inter already take enough heat from the Roma and Milan blogs around here as it is. Such a shame The Offside doesn’t have anyone defending the ‘good guys’ of Italy. Perhaps Paolo and I should cooperatively reinvigorate the Inter blog ;)…
Nah.

Little secret, RT: I love Inter, and bend over backwards here to make sure I report all the bad crap about them. I mean, it’s one thing to flagrantly show devotion to Fiorentina and Palermo — who’s going to get offended when I say good stuff about them? But Inter? That’s another thing entirely. In addition to reporting all scandals, I also have to make sure I mock Adriano at least three times a week, and that’s just a start.
Thanks Inara, fixed that misspelling.
And, Chris, see that little British flag? Click that, and it’s like magic! (:

Regarding Grimi, guys, the updates in the Portuguese papers make it sound like it’s likely, but not yet official — sounds like they’re waiting on Grimi’s own consent, if such a thing is actually needed.
