Toni a Bayern Target?

By: Martha | March 16th, 2007

Sell me? To Germany? Please, no!The German press today is apparently splashing Luca Toni’s face all over its sports pages (Or at least The Bild is. Supposedly. I can’t find him anywhere on their website, but then I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed.), announcing that the Fiorentina striker is Bayern Munich’s primary summer transfer target. Bayern recently announced their intentions to invest about €30 million in new players this year, and it’s rumored that club overlord Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is on the verge of opening talks with the Viola to bring Toni to Germany.

On one hand, it sounds plausible: Bayern would offer Toni the Champions League spot he has periodically claimed as a reason for his possible departure from Florence, and it’s certainly reasonable that the German club would be interested in adding a striker with a solid track record. On the other hand, though, Toni doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who would leave a place where he’s finding success, popularity and comfort, even for a giant pile of cash. Don’t get me wrong — I’d be stunned if he didn’t leave Fiorentina this summer, but it would be equally shocking were he to leave Serie A. He’s so comfortable in Italy right now and (quite reasonably) obviously loves being a top scorer there. Why, after finally establishing himself as a star, would he turn his back and go abroad? It’s not as if he wouldn’t get paid well in Italy.

Of course, the €25 million price tag the Viola have put on Toni makes me hope he goes somewhere, be it Germany or somewhere else in Italy (In the land of the rumor, Inter are the front-runners.) — the thought of Fiorentina with that much to spend on new, young talent is an exciting one indeed.

Ah, Bild. There is a picture of Toni in this article, second in the slideshow, but it’s not one of his better pictures. And while I’m guessing if Bayern were to throw enough cash around, they could persuade him, I think he’d be better off staying in Serie A.

Luca should go to a club that will go to champions league next year but he might do poorly in Germany.

I agree that it would be surprising to see him leave Italy, but this is exactly what Fiorentina need - competition for his signature. Hopefully this drives his price up. Gotta sell high.
