Toni Deal is Done

By: Martha | May 30th, 2007

Ooooh ToniAs several people mentioned in the comments yesterday, Luca Toni’s move to Bayern Munich (first reported in the press more than a month ago) was made official today.

Having evidently forgotten about his desire to play Champions League football next year, Toni signed through summer 2011 (The original rumors claimed the agreement was through 2012.) for a salary of about £4 million per season, a total that’s actual more than the amount reported in those April rumors. The striker, who missed the last month or so of Fiorentina’s season with a foot injury and then recovering from surgery, will be in Munch for his medical on June 8 and, assuming his head doesn’t fall off or something, will be a Bayern player from that day on.

Disappointingly for Fiorentina fans, the deal is less rich than was originally rumored: Rather than the €18 million reported in those early rumors, the actual amount of the sale is about €11 million. Still, though, that gives the Viola a nice little pile of cash to invest in new players — and the spending began earlier this month with the signing of 18-year-old Czech midfielder Jan Hable, who reportedly chose Fiorentina over both Inter and Celtic. Eeeeexcellent! That’s just the sort of smart investment we’ve come to expect of the current Viola management.

Couple the above sentiments with the fact that German food is not good (though the beer does rock) and the move makes even less sense.

There was a quote from Luca that I saw that was something to the effect of he made a promise to the Della Valle family (owners of the team) that he would not go to an Italian club. Maybe this was what allowed him to leave with ease and on good terms with the club.

Plus, even though Luca said he’d only leave to a club where he’d play champions league football, I think this was really about him signing one big fat contract in his last chance to do so. He went from a salary of 1.5 million euros at Fiorentina to a salary of 4 million pounds per at Bayern Munich (4 year deal too). For a guy who was a late bloomer and bounced around small Italian clubs often in the lower divisions, he needed to cash in on his notoriety at this point in his career after nearly 50 serie A goals in 2 seasons with Fiorentina and a strong performance in the world cup.
