Another Day, Another Referee at Fault

By: Martha | October 1st, 2007

Lots of happy.Someone is always pissed at the referees after a matchday, and today it’s the Torino boardroom that’s reverberating with impotent rage, blaming the officials for their derby lost.

Immediately after David Trezeguet’s brutal, injury-time winner yesterday, coach Walter Novellino exploded, claiming the striker had been miles offside, and that the goal should have been disallowed. Ignoring both the wrinkle in the offside rule that allows players not involved in the attacking move to hang out offside, and the fact that the ball was passed to Trezeguet by a Toro player (oops), Novellino insisted his team had been screwed, and demanded that Pierluigi Collina, the King of All Referees, weigh in on the matter.

Joining the chorus of rage this morning was Torino president Urbano Cairo, who has had enough in general, claiming this is the third game in a row in which his team has been victimized by poor (Or is it eeeeeevil?) officiating, blaming not only the Juve game, but also the Parma loss AND the Siena draw on referee error. Jeez, who knew? Why, were it not for the fools in the bright yellow, Toro’d be top of the table! Mmmhmm.

Oh, and regarding Collina: Always accommodating, he’s weighed in. The goal was fine, but thanks for stopping by.

uhhhhhh....we weren't arguing Trez's goal. I'm going to now stop giving that douchebag credit...for anything.

And I think the best striker in Italy is Ibra or Crespo, Roberto. And no...I'm not an Inter fan. Don't like them, don't hate them either. Just based on what I've seen thus far this year, I'd rate them both higher than whats-his-face.

If Collina lasts the whole season then I think he'll be a fixture there and Serie A will all the better for it. But I can just as likely see him being done with this by Christmas. God, what a job. Italian Presidents have to be the absolute worst sons of bitches to deal with and I'll include my boy De Laurentis in that crew.

  • No matter how much you dislike us, no matter how badly you'd like to bet us, Trez's legal goal was simply what deadly strikers do. They can change a game in the last second leaving players, fans, and coaches (in this case) pissed off wondering what just happened.

Forza Trezegol- Best striker in Italy

  • I feel EXACTLY the same way, Joe -- hate strongly dislike Trezeguet, desperately wanted Torino to win, but don't have a complaint about the goal. What do you think for the Collina resignation? Christmas? Then he'll devote himself to fishing and cigars, ala Lippi.

I know it's not the Italian way...and God knows I take every opportunity to slam Juventus, but does no one ever lose with dignity anymore? JesusMotherMaryandJoseph. Trez is my least favorite player on my least favorite Serie A side and I think the goal was legit. Collina has one hell of a year ahead of him. I wonder how long he'll last before he just ups and tells Lega Calcio to eff themselves?
