Torino v Juventus: Typical Trezeguet

By: Martha | September 30th, 2007

Damned TrezeguetMan, what an absolutely brutal loss for Torino. While they never looked likely to win, Toro fought Juve to a stalemate for 93 minutes and were certainly worth a draw. It wasn’t to be, though, and you could tell trouble was on the horizon when, in the 80th minute, Juve’s big three — who had been invisible for the entire second half — started popping up all over the pitch, creating chances for one another and going closer and closer to breaking the deadlock. Torino got agonizingly close to surviving, but all it took was an ill-advised header by Dellafiore, and everyone’s favorite goal poacher David Trezeguet was there to place a perfect volley into the back of the Toro net. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Until the last 10 minutes, the match wasn’t anything special. There was a ton of passion on display, a lot of hard work and many, many cards; neither team ever got into much of a rhythm, though everyone tried really, really hard. Toro gave the ball away like crazy, but they certainly weren’t alone — it was one of those matches where you want to scream at both teams to get the damn ball on the ground and stop just kicking it away already. Both sides seemed to be really feeling the pressure of the derby, which is probably understandable, given the youth of much of Juve’s team and the extreme underdog status of their opponents.

Torino’s best player was easily Alvaro Recoba who, despite occasionally trying to do much, created most of his team’s chances and showed his class with even the smallest touched. Also good was young Marco Motta, who came on at left back with about 20 minutes left and ran more than everyone else on the pitch during that time, knocking anyone who dared come into his path on his ass. In the end, though, it was all for nought, and Trezeguet did what he always does with half-chances, securing three points for his team and vaulting them over Roma and Fiorentina into second place in the table.

Oh and did you see how your beloved Corini pulled Nedved’s hair?? Not cool!

Are you kidding, Asmah? That was the best part of the match! (: I’m not a Nedved fan either, so I was secretly proud of Corini. (I hope you appreciate the self-control it took for me not to discuss it in the post, though!)

Yeah I agree it was probably the second best part of the match after Trez’s goal. The look on Nedved’s face was definitely classic.

What I appreciated Martha (other that Juve’s fantastic and unexpected 3 points in the 93rd), is the self-control Nedved showed on that occasion. I mean some people respond to provocations with headbutts, so…

Exactly. It just shows what an experienced player Nedved is. BTW Buffon is a beast.

Im glad juve won, but come on this is torino, a team that has yet to win a game. Trezegol’s goal was Very lucky (not that im complaining) but juve need to pick up the pace in the midfeild and start attacking through the center instead of the sides. Even on counter attacks they start on the center and then go through the sides and lose the play. players need to be involved 90 min of the match not once every 20 min (nedved) if juve can reach that level then hell yeah they can compete for the scudetto. Palladino played amazing that nutmeg he has was beautiful im glad this kid is getting a chance to show what a hell of a player he is, however there were a couple of chances when he could of went for goal but chose to go wide and cross. Nocerino played by far the best game of his season so far he got almost all of his challenges like a true defensive midfielder. Del piero also showed us at times why he is the KING. lets hope trezegol and iaquinta stay healthy for fiorentina, cause if both of them are out, lets just say a 0-0 draw would be exactly what i expect from this juve, unless players decide to shoot outside the 18 yd box.
    FORZA JUVE!!!!

Marco, I was frankly stunned he didn’t throw himself on the ground and roll around clutching his knee so, yeah, I guess I was sort of impressed, too.

I don’t like Juve even a little, Adam, but that Palladino nutmeg was definitely nasty.
