Trezeguet for Kanoute, Or: Have you All Lost Your Damn Minds?!

The odds that David Trezeguet will be at Juve next season are slim-to-none. This we know. Where he’s going, however, has been the subject of much speculation, each piece of it more crazy than the last. This morning, however, I think we’ve reached the pinacle of crazy, because it’s being reported in several places that he may go to Sevilla — in a swap for Freddie Kanoute. Freddie Kanoute! The guy who is currently blowing doors off of La Liga, to the tune of 19 goals in 27 games. Yeah, sure — trade him for a fragile, also-aging guy who scores a lot of lucky goals but has been quiet as a mouse (six goals in 28 games) as of late. Sounds like a good plan to me.
Now, it wouldn’t be a straight swap because Kanoute is signed through 2009 and has a £17.8 million release clause in his contract, so the deal would leave Sevilla with a pile of cash with which to play (though it sounds as if they’ll accept a smaller fee, if Trez is thrown into the deal). But, still — why would you get rid of Kanoute now? I understand that he’s not getting any younger (both men are 29) and his value right now is as high as it’s going to get and everything, but Sevilla are the most exciting team in Spain, challenge for the title for the first time in recent memory (ever?), and his play is a huge part of their success. Wouldn’t they want him to stay around for at least one more year, just to see what happens? I mean — hello, Champions League! Next year, they’ll be on that huge stage, and will have a chance to really shine. Plus, how can they be sure balls will bounce off Trezeguet into the goal in Spain as effectively as they do in France and Italy?
Frankly, if Sevilla make a deal this idiotic, they deserve to have Trezeguet break down entirely and never play again.
