Rumors to Distract Us As We Mourn For Frey’s Knee

By: Martha | December 13th, 2007

Poor, poor Seb.•Sebastian Frey is having surgery tomorrow and will probably be out 6-8 weeks. That faint sound you hear is me weeping copiously.

•And, continuing with the Fiorentina theme, Tomas Ujfalusi seems seconds from joining Sevilla, which is terrible timing considering the Viola injury problems in the back. According to the Czech’s agent, the Spanish side’s president really, really, really wants him: “He doesn’t only have it in his mind: he has it in his heart, in his head, and in all the parts.” Got that? All the parts.

•Cagliari beat Sampdori 1-0 yesterday in their Coppa Italia match, and Walter Mazzarri was not happy.

•Rafael van der Vaart is slutting it up all over Europe, including with Juve, Inter and Milan.

•A sourceless story on Tribal Football claims Ricardo Oliveira is prepared to return to Milan on a mission of mercy, bringing the club the goal-scoring prowess they’re lacking. Milan? Want Oliviera back? Why, that’s as likely as the English FA hiring an Italian to coach their national team. Oh, wait.

•Yep, barring a sudden implosion of contract negotiations, it’s Fabio Capello for England. Let the shock and awe begin.

•On the subject of Italians abroad, Guiseppe Rossi is back in training and could make his return to the Villarreal team this weekend.

•Three young Ghanians from Liberty Professionals — the club that produced Sulley Ali Muntari and Asamoah Gyan — will reportedly be joining Udinese during the winter break. The players are Abdul Aziz Tetteh, Rahiu Alhassan and Kwadwo Asamoahm, and all three of them have apparently already trained with Udine. Additionally, Gyan may be leaving the club in January, for an unspecified EPL team.

•Though there’s still nothing up on the Inter website, C4 claim the move of Daniel Carvalho to Inter is now official. it’s been said he might spend the second half on loan with Ascoli because of his non-EU status, but that’s not been confirmed.

•And, more from Inter: Things have progressed on the Jeremy Menez front, and Inter are reportedly in active negotiations with Monaco for a January transfer. There is the small issue, however, of a difference of about €4 million on the 20-year-old’s price.

•Arturo Lupoli has been getting more and more irritated by his lack of playing time at Fiorentina, and Napoli are eager to give him an escape, albeit on loan and only until summer.

Johanna, they’re freaking CURSED. Honestly, this is probably the end of the CL pipedream. (It’s ok to cry.)

Jennifer, I’m fully confident Zlatan’s grown up enough to get over it, but the jury’s still out on RvdV. Actually, I bet they’d get Zlatan’s OK before even going after him, don’t you think?

Looks like Fiorentina is going to be buying their tickets for next year’s UEFA Cup, again. With or without Frey, Udinese just looks that much more dangerous.

I’m going to need to see Carvalho’s signature in blood to believe this. This kid could walk into nearly any XI in the world, turned down Barca, and even Arsene wanted him bad. I wonder how badly his knee was shredded and whether or not it’s the reason why he had to settle for Inter.

What is wrong with Ujfalusi…as it stands right now the Viola have a better chance of being in Europe than Sevilla do next year (With all due respect to Sevilla, they are a strong side but they won’t be winning the CL this year)

It seems like everything is going wrong at once, I guess this is nothing new in Florence…

Poor Fiorentina, first the slump, now losing the 2nd best keeper in Italy. Although their second keeper Avramov is decent, he’s nowhere near Frey.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Why, Fiorentina, why? Okay, maybe this Lupatelli will turn out to be a mini-Buffon … no, wait! There’s hope. THERE’S HOPE.

[Also, tiny squee for Joe Rossi.]

Francesco, I actually think Lupatelli is second choice; Avramov is third. Plus there’s a teenager on whom they’re really high, who might be sort of even with Avramov.

[And I appreciate your optimism, roswitha. I'm clinging to it.]

Chris, I’m with you — the confidence of the reports is odd given the lack of official confirmation.

Nolan, he tried to get out over the summer, too, I’m not sure what his motivation is, but this is definitely nothing new. (They made him captain throughout pre-season, which I assumed at the time was something of a bribe to stay.)

Martha, the teenager your talking about is Pazzagli, who is the Primavera goalkeeper and supposedly has a bright future ahead of him.

    Never liked Lupatelli, too inconsistent.

I wish i could punch the owner of udinese in the face for selling Sulley Muntari to portsmouth for so cheap, serie A is selling all their top african players to the EPL it makes me wanna puke, our league is being turned into a giant feeder club for the EPL clubs as far as african players are concerned. Now they wanna sell Gyan, who I dont think is nearly worth as much as muntari….UDINESE GOT SERIOUSLY RIPPED OFF ON MUNTARI, hes worth 20mil pounds now, why would you sell him so young and with so much potential

Udinese is a selling club. They cultivate young players and once they are worth lots of money they are sold off and new young players are brought in.
