UEFA Considers Bigass Bans for Brawlers
By: Martha | March 13th, 2007
According to reports in unnamed Italian papers, the central participants in the Inter-Valencia post-game brawl could be facing some serious bans. UEFA’s disciplinary committee meets to consider the matter tomorrow, but rumors suggest they will request a 10-month ban for David Narvarro, four months each for Burdisso, Marchena and Maicon, and two months for Ivan Cordoba. Damn. While the fact that Inter are out of European competition makes the punishments a little less significant for them at the moment, Valencia could potentially be without a regular as they move forward in Champions League.
Of course, all of this is only in the realm of rumor right now and, even if these punishments are requested, that doesn’t mean they’ll be approved. What adds another far more significant wrinkle for Inter, though, is the suggestion that UEFA might ask for FIFA to endorse whatever bans they hand down. If that happened, it would mean the suspensions would apply not only to UEFA-sanctioned games, but also to club action. And, while Inter are so damn far ahead that even the loss of every striker on the team is unlikely to deny them the Scudetto, playing without several regulars would certainly require some significant adjustment.
I still don’t get why tunnel-brawlers Figo, Buffon Toldo and Cambiasso are totally uninvolved in any punishment, but what the hell do I know?

I think Gigi Buffon was watching the brawl from Turin, cheering on his former Azzurri teammate Toldo as he charged into the Valencia dressing room because no one appreciates a brawling goalkeeper like another goalkeeper. Although I doubt he was supporting Inter (scudetto bitterness).

Sigh. If Louise wasn’t here, god only knows WHAT teams I would have people on by now.
It’s that other national team keeper, Toldo. Lemme go fix it, thanks!
