UEFA Cup: BOBOGOL! (And His Friends)

By: Martha | November 8th, 2007

Viola lurveThe old men were on fire in Florence tonight, with Martin Jorgensen grabbing a brace, and Bobo Vieri scoring in his second straight UEFA Cup match, leading an under-strength Fiorentina side to a 6-1 win over shell-shocked Elfsborg.

Burdened by both injuries and a need to rest some regulars, Cesare Prandelli started little-used defenders Anthony Vanden Borre and Federico Balzaretti, and paired Bobo with youngster Pablo Daniel Osvaldo up top. The team quickly paid dividends, with Franco Semioli — who seemingly assisted on all the goals and was fantastic on the night — crossing for Jorgensen, who volley the Viola into the lead in the fourth minute. Less than 60 seconds later, Bobo had doubled the lead through what sounds like a pretty sick goal: 18 yards out, into the top corner of the next.

Elfsborg hauled one back shortly before the half and briefly looked to be getting back into the game, but once the hour mark came Fiorentina shifted into another gear, and it was Katie bar the door for the Swedes. Marco Donadel crushed one from 30 yards out in the 62nd minute and, before the visitors could even get their bearings, Per Kroldrup headed home a Semioli cross, and the route was on. The fifth completed Jorgensen’s brace (from Semioli, yet again), and the sixth was the first goal ever by 19-year-old striker Samuel Di Carmine, who I didn’t know existed until just now. The assist? Yeah, Semioli.

The win leaves the Viola joint-top of their group with Villarreal and in great position to go through. No one else has more than one point, but AEK Athens and Mladá Boleslav don’t play until tomorrow. No matter the result, though, Fiorentina are in good shape: The top three teams go through, and it’s awfully unlikely either Eolfsborg or Mladá Boleslav will suddenly mount a challenge to the leaders.

Edit: Highlights here; thanks to LivornoMarco (poor bastard) for the link.

Damn … I thought Fiorentina would win this one, particularly after the strong opening 10 minutes, but 6 goals? Crazy. Long live Bobo.

Di Carmine is the star of the Primavera squad. He’s on the UEFA Cup roster because of that new homegrown rule.

Thank you, Francesco — I feel a complete failure as a Viola fan, but I see this is like only his third-ever appearance for the senior team.

I’m thrilled to see the 6 goals, especially considering that Pazzini and Mutu were not out there (though it may have been good for Pazzini to put a couple in the back of the net against the hapless Swedes). And having Jorgensen back in form is going to be invaluable going forward, given his experience and versatility.

Hopefully this builds confidence and with some key players rested, the squad will be in top shape to take all 3 points from Udinese at the Franchi on Sunday. That’s a big game for Fiorentina to help consolidate their CL placing.

It’s not your fault, let’s blame Italian football for not playing their young talents more! But then again Fiorentina do a good job when it comes to that.

E’ (quasi) ufficiale: il Pallone d’oro è Kakà
(it’s [almost] official: The golden ball is kaka)
Galliani lo ha anche detto: “Kakà sarà il prossimo Pallone d’oro”.
(Galliani has also said: “Kaka will be the next Golden Ball)

I think we all saw this one coming… Full article here in italian:

Mele, the rumor last year (Buffon, I think?) ended up being TOTALLY wrong, but this one isn’t going out on a limb so much. (This morning i saw an article in which Galliani was quoted as saying he knows nothing about whoe has won; it’s amazing how differently a few words can be spun!)

That is true, but we all know Kaka has a very strong base in this, and is generally favored to win. But who knows? Anything can happen. Personally, I would be surprised if he didn’t win.

This win has to have some teams worried in the Serie A. Fiorentina don’t have the most amazing team on paper, but the first 11 are in form and the backups and the backups to the backups.

As a Rossoneri im particularly worried, even if Milan can pick up the pace, who is going to fall off it? Inter? Juve? Roma? Fiorentina?

I think Milan are going to have to win the CL this time ‘cos there is little to convince me there going to make the top 4

All I could find was each goal in its own clip, but this is way better — thanks, Marco, adding the link now.
