UEFA’s Team of the Year: This Time, We Can’t Blame the Writers
By: Martha | December 6th, 2006
UEFA have announced the 60 nominees (players and coaches) for their team of the year (11 players, as you might expect, and one coach) — and, get this, the fans vote, rather than those foolish, foolish “experts!” This time, people, if Henry doesn’t make it, you have only yourselves to blame.
Right now, all we have to complain about really is who isn’t among the choices. For example, there’s a handful of Italians on the list — including six Azzurri — but, as La Gazetta della Sport has pointed out, no Francesco Totti. Sure his season last year involved less brilliance than injuries, but the last few months count for something, right? They’re in 2006, and he’s been better than 3/4 of the list during that time.
Anyway, I plan to vote entirely with my heart rather than my brain, so my ballot looks this way: Buffon; Grosso, Canna, Puyol (sorry, Matrix), Zambrotta; Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Kaka, Gattuso; Sheva, Drogba. What’s your list? Go vote — just for fun, let’s see if we, the unwashed masses, can deny Henry this one, as well. Mwahahaha. Hell, his teammates would probably thank us!

Sheva? This year? I went for Henry and Eto’o. (Although we all know that in addition to having the character of a pig, Henry plays 4-5-1.)
And… Martha, fess up here. Was Matrix really actually an option for you? (My entire future opinion of you rests on your answer.)

Oh god — no pressure! The secret answer is no, I’ve always thought he was awful (when Nesta got hurt in the World Cup and he came on, I was sure we were done). Is that the right answer?
And, regarding Sheva: He’s always been one of my favorites. Not voting for him would be sort of like not voting for Figo, and you know that could never happen.

I went Toni and Henry at striker. How did you overlook Toni, Martha?
