Ukraine v Azzurri: What, Me Worry?

By: Martha | September 12th, 2007

Gooooooooaaaaaal!Well, that was a hell of a lot more exciting than the France game. Jesus. So, do we call Dondoni a genius now because he started Antonio Di Natale and the guy scored two goals? Or is he just lucky the team saved his job for another day?

Overall, it was probably a deserved win, if only because Italy did more with their chances and, for the most part, defended awfully well. Ukraine were no pushovers, though, and they played with truly astounding confidence while attacking ferociously, either over the top or with quick counters. And Andriy Shevchenko hit the bar so hard with a third-minute free kick that it’s a miracle the thing didn’t break. Seriously — the ball had hit the bar and rebounded back into play before Buffon had even landed from his dive. It was insane.

When they could clear their half (not always the easiest of tasks), Italy found loads of space on the Ukraine flanks, and looked far more threatening than they had against France. Vincenzo Iaquinta had several early chances on the edge of the box, and Andrea Pirlo was working his usual magic, eventually setting up Di Natale’s first goal with a perfectly weighted pass, dropping the ball right on the Udine man.

In the second half, Italy sat in a bit at first while Ukraine had a lot of the possession, which meant Shevchenko continued to look lethal (particularly when Andrea Barzagli gave him the ball right outside the area only to be bailed out by Buffon, who had a great game). Eventually, Sheva got the goal he deserved, pouncing on the ball in the box after his team screwed up a free kick. Shortly thereafter, though, with Ukraine pressing, a great ball from Massimo Ambrosini set Di Natale free and, one-on-one with the keeper, he finished convincingly to put the game away.

Oh and, in case you missed it, Scotland beat France to go top with 21 points, one ahead of Italy and two clear of France. Woo hoo, second place! Ahem. There’s everything still to play for, as they say, and the Italy camp will be very pleased to have earned themselves a month of relative peace going into a month off before the next set of qualifiers.

I just survived an 80 minute stroke, right from when Sheva hit the crossbar. It weakened when Italy went up a goal, got a little more intense when Scotland went up on France, sent me into convulsions when Ukraine leveled it and kinda tapered off when they went back up and the final whistle sounded.

I am super happy they won and I am going to leave it at that!!

Shit, how did Scotland pull it off again? I knew they could, but I was really hoping for a draw in that game. Italy would be in a much better 2nd place one point up on Scotland and even with France (2nd becasuse of tie breaks) then in the current 2nd one up France and one behind Scotland. For 2 more qulifying match days I am going to be a huge Ukraine Fan.

ahah, well, guess it’s good my high school team had a game today, seeing as I probably would have had a heart attack every time Sheva touched the ball if i was watching… But this is very satisfying! France in 3rd, Italy 2nd with 21, only 1 point behind Scotland. Me likey! Now, is it the top two teams from each group that precede, like in the World Cup? One of the few things about football i dont know =P
and nice to have you back Martha! I’ve missed you =]

You and me both, Paolo — I was actually pacing through most of the game, which I haven’t done since the World Cup. It was exhausting.

And thanks, mele, I’m very, very happy to be back! Yep, the top two teams go through from each group; as far as I know there’s no World Cup-style “best of the third-place teams” playoff, either, so it’s top two or nothing.

Donadoni still hasn’t created a team. A win is a win, but we are still not playing well. We still lack that true number 10 to relieve Pirlo of all the pressure that is put on him to create every single chance.

Sounds uninspiring and unconvincing, especially as good as it seems Scotland’s defense was against an unrelenting French attack today. Hopefully, Toni will be healthy for that one, but we still need some more creativity in the midfield.

So any speculation on who will be at centerback with Barzagli for the Georgia match?

zaccardo really got a bad rap in the WC for that own goal. he actually moves forward very well and is solid defensively. oddo is no spring chicken and i think zaccardo should really get a call up to play right back.

francesco, great point on getting another creative player to help pirlo. i think aquilani is that kind of player, alessandro rosina is definitely that kind of player. donadoni should really field a lineup consisting of pirlo, aquilani, rosina and quagliarella. but he won’t.

What has happened to Quagliarella? Last time I watched Italy he scored two amazing goals.

A win is a win and that’s great. Really. The Azzurri played well enough to win but they could’ve easily lost. Francesco, you are absoultely correct. Donadoni hasn’t created anything close to a ‘team.’
    * Twice now he has called in Del Piero and played him in the first match of a qualifier and then moved him up in the stands for the next after another poor performance. Listen, I don’t think ADP has it anymore for the Azzurri but make up your mind.
    * Lucarelli did nothing to deserve another call up. Then when he does call him up he only gets him in for less than 20 minutes.
    * Why didn’t he play Quagliarella in these matches. I know he got a little time against Ukraine but holy crap. He was a monster against Lithunia and then barely gets a sniff even after Toni goes down.
    * Is it just me or could the Azzurri really have used Pippo yesterday? I’m not a huge fan but I think his nose for the net could’ve paid dividends yesterday.
    * Starting Camoranesi twice? Good God. That is a fireable offense right there.
    * We need to start giving the young guns some real opportunities here. Guys like Aqualani, Quagliarella, Montolivo, etc…should get some playing time with the Azzurri. And why didn’t De Rossi play?

The squad did well to win without Toni and Gattuso. Two wins against Georgia and Scotland (much more a Herculean task than any of figured on 12 months ago) and we’re in.

Against Georgia the center pairing will most probably be Panucci and Barzagli.
